Semington isn’t suitable for more houses, say residents

A PLANNING application to build 75 homes on land north of Pound Lane in Semington, has been met with strong objection from local residents.

Over 130 letters have now been submitted to Wiltshire Council which fiercely object to the development which residents say will severly affect the dynamic of the village.

Semington Parish Council has also opposed the application citing Wiltshire Council’s Core Strategy which states, ‘Developments in large and small villages will be limited to that needed to help meet the housing needs of settlements and to improve employment opportunities, services and facilties’ – all of which the parish council says the development does none of.

Residents and the parish council also accuse Richborough Estates of not sufficiently consulting with the village. Parish Clerk Roger Coleman said, “There was plenty of time for the developers to consult villagers and the Parish Council and they were invited to a meeting where they might have outlined their proposals as part of an open agenda with villagers present.”

Subsequently, Richborough Estates turned down the invitation saying, “In our experience, meeting with parish councillors is counterproductive.”

One resident wrote, “I am very concerned that this development is totally impracticable for the site which it is planned to be built on. This has also been sprung upon us with very little consultation. The development will increase the size of the village by 19%, which is totally unwarranted.

“As the village has few facilities, no village shop, only a part time post office and village pub, the new residents will have to drive to the nearby towns for their everyday needs. With Pound Lane as the only access, considerable problems will result. This lane is far to narrow for the volume of traffic that will be generated by the extra 75 houses.

“At school times the lane is frequently blocked by cars, with children walking in the road. Frequently, larger vehicles already have to drive over the grass verge by the school to get through.

“As 24 new houses are already planned to be built in St George’s Road, I can see no reason to expand the village any further.”

The consultation period has now closed and a decision is expected on Tuesday 13th September. To view the application, visit Wiltshire Council’s planning website and enter the planning application reference number 16/05783/OUT

  • Schoolchildren enjoy theatre trip as part of development programme

Pupils from Bowerhill Primary School visited the Bristol Hippodrome to watch Matilda the Musical as part of the school’s personal development programme.

A total of 170 pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6 attended the theatre trip as part of the school’s ‘7 in 7 for Personal Development’ initiative, which aims to give every child the opportunity to experience live theatre three times before leaving primary school.

Headteacher Chris Light said, “Visiting the theatre is a big part of our ‘7 in 7 for Personal Development’ and we want all of our children to experience the magic of the theatre three times before they leave primary school.

  • Community rallies round charity facing lift repair bill

A Semington charity is facing a £45,000 bill to repair its ageing lift after plans to install a donated replacement were halted, despite local businesses rallying round to support the project.

The setback comes weeks after Chantelle Mead, chief executive at the Independent Living Centre in Semington, spent three weeks living and working inside the Independent Living Centre’s lift to raise funds for essential building improvements, including rewiring, a boiler replacement and a new lift.

The fundraising effort raised £1,850, with additional support coming from a donation offer of a lift from Stiltz and work from local builders Clements and Morris, who coordinated the installation project and sourced donated materials from suppliers.

However, Chantelle said the project has been halted because Wiltshire Council said the Stiltz lift does not meet the regulations required for a commercial building.

  • Melksham Town stalwart celebrates 50 years of service

Melksham Town Football Club stalwart Dave Phillips has celebrated 50 years’ service to the club.

Dave first joined the club’s committee on 12th June 1976, immediately taking on the role of assistant secretary. It marked the start of a lifelong commitment that has seen him serve in a variety of roles, including secretary, vice-chairman and now life president, while attending more than 2,100 competitive matches, home and away.

“My first job when I joined the committee was to clear out the old shed which became the club’s cellar, and since then, the club has been my life,” said Dave.

“Highlights include seeing us win the Wiltshire Premier Shield in 2000 against Swindon Town, beating them 1—0 in the final at their ground, winning the Western League Division One title in 1979/80 and then again in 1996/97 and the Western League Premier title in 2015. Also winning the Les Phillips Cup in 2016/17."

  • Love Melksham Column

More than a 100 years ago, the kind people of Melksham took care of wounded Australian and New Zealander soldiers during World War I.

In gratitude, the people of Canberra in Australia raised funds to build a community centre on Spa Road in Melksham, a transnational recognition of Melksham’s kindness, named the Canberra Centre.

This hub of the community was redeveloped in the 60s for young people and now Canberra Youth Centre is the home of 4Youth South West, a local charity dedicated to nurturing, supporting and serving young people in Melksham, continuing the legacy of kindness and care that the building represents.

  • Plans for massive solar farm go to appeal

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Controversial proposals to cover an area of land near Melksham the size of 24 football pitches with solar panels will be heard by a planning inspector after Wiltshire Council turned them down.

The proposal, put forward by Blue Stone Renewables I Ltd, involves the installation of more than 31,000 solar panels, each standing at 2.7 metres tall.

The solar and battery storage facility would cover 17 hectares on a site totalling 26 hectares at Whistle Mead in Chalfield, near Melksham.

The site is located about 180 metres from the nearest house and under a mile from the National Trust’s Grade I listed Great Chalfield Manor.

The matter was debated by members of Wiltshire Council’s strategic planning committee back in April.

  • Plans for 1,300 new homes near Semington

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Plans to build 1,300 homes between the villages of Semington and Hilperton have been revealed.

In a pre-application consultation, developer Lightwood Strategic says it wants to build a new “mixed-use neighbourhood” between the villages.

The new proposals include a village centre and a new 420-space primary school. Allotments, village greens and sports pitches also form part of the proposal.

The proposed development site extends to around 117 hectares of agricultural land and is bisected by the A361 Trowbridge-to-Melksham road.

For this reason, new pedestrian crossings, roundabouts and gateway features would be introduced to slow down traffic.
