Two classic plays, Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, are to be screened at the Assembly Hall, Melksham, and are performed from The Globe Theatre – the spiritual home of Shakespeare.
Macbeth (7th November 7pm) £8. Macbeth is the hero of Scotland. He and his friend Banquo, returning from the battlefield, are met by three ‘Weird Sisters’, who prophesy that Macbeth will become King. Macbeth confides in his wife, and together they plot to murder King Duncan, while he is sleeping in Macbeth’s castle.
This done, Macbeth is crowned King. Rather than finding security in his new role, Macbeth fears all those around him, even his old friends. As he becomes more desperate to secure his position, his acts become bloodier, and his wife succumbs to madness. It falls to Duncan’s noble son, Malcolm, and Macduff to deliver Scotland from this ‘butcher’.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream (5th December 7pm) £8. Hermia loves Lysander and Helena loves Demetrius – but Demetrius is supposed to be marrying Hermia… When the Duke of Athens tries to enforce the marriage, the lovers take refuge in the woods and wander into the midst of a dispute between the king and queen of the fairies.
Shakespeare put some of his most dazzling dramatic poetry at the service of this teasing, glittering, hilarious and amazingly inventive play, whose seriousness is only fleetingly glimpsed beneath its dreamlike surface. A unique opportunity to experience Shakespeare from The Globe Theatre and at an affordable price too.
