FORMER town councillor, Maureen Weston, has moved to a care home in Royal Wotton Bassett, and friends and family are inviting past friends and colleagues to get in contact with the much-loved ex-Melksham resident.
Maureen was the chairwoman of the Melksham Urban District Council from 1976 to 1978 and is also know in the town for her work as a St John Ambulance superintendent.
Local woman, Sue Mortimer and close friend of Maureen says, “Maureen recently moved into a St John Ambulance Brigade care home near her family.
“Mark, her son, says she is physically well and her other needs are being met by the staff. He has asked me to pass on her good wishes to all her friends past and present in Melksham and surrounding areas.
“Maureen was a long-serving member of St John Ambulance and many of us teenagers of the 60s will have fond memories of her as our St John superintendent and the annual fortnightly camps at Bexhill on Sea. One particular memory of mine was the year of 1966 when we had to travel to Bexhill by train as we could not find a coach driver to take us as everyone, including Maureen’s husband David, were going to be watching the football World Cup final! We were sharing a carriage with two German girls and listening to the match on the radio! The whole train erupted at the full time whistle (well all except the two German girls!)
“Others will remember her for her tireless work she did for Melksham as a town councillor and her service as a valid member of the personnel staff at Bowyers.
“I am sure Maureen would love to receive letters from anyone who wishes to share their memories with her or to tell her of what they and their families are doing now. Mark has specifically asked for letters only as she gets a bit tearful and frustrated at times, especially when she realizes she is not at home and David is no longer with her. Any letters from her friends can be read out to her and it will give the family the opportunity to join in the memories with her. The address of her care home is The Lawns, Royal Wootton Bassett SN4 7AN.”
