THE Pilot Music Night, a night that showcased new young talent, has been discontinued. Creator of Melodious Music, Mel Austin, says he made the decision after much consideration.
Melodious Music/mobsta promotions run by Mel Austin (ex-George Ward School deputy head) has supported young teen talent since 1994 when he started the very first Rock Concert at the old George Ward School, to raise money for a local cerebral palsy sufferer.
He said, “It was so successful that it continued for many years, on an annual basis, raising money for school music equipment, school trips and a variety of charities, until the school withdrew support in 2008. Since then, it has been extended to all local youngsters and has grown to include a monthly gig, to showcase the young talent, along with appearances at fetes and charity events, CD album recording and releases, songwriting and PA sound support.
“However, due to audience numbers dropping despite an appeal for people to attend, and only a few new additions to the night, it has not become a viable event for the pub. More alarmingly, the night’s open mic saw no performers.
“I am very grateful for all the support which I have received over the years from Melksham landlords/landladies in various public houses, most recently Nick and Debbie at The Pilot, the local events organisers who have given our kids the chance to perform, from the audiences who have come along to witness some outstanding young talent in their early growth, most recently the George families, the priests, my wife and the parents and family/friends of our most recent crop of talent, Melissa Gould, Heather Kerr, Tom Coller and Izzie Felstead. A special mention is due to Courtney Buchanan and family, who has been the most consistently brilliant performer and supporter over the last few years.
“Although the regular gigs will cease, I will still continue to work with any local talented youngsters who need support, and I may still be able to provide PA sound equipment for local village fetes and charity events. Thank you again for all your support for the Pilot Music Night over the last few years.”
