IT’S been a busy and successful summer down at Spencer Melksham Bowls Club.
Our league teams have been performing well with both the Men’s Tigers and Lions finishing third in their respective Triples Leagues. Spencer D Team reached the Semi-Finals of the ‘Tea and Biscuits’ Finals, losing by one shot to Calne.
Our Men’s 4 rink team just missed out on qualifying for the end of season cup but nevertheless enjoyed a superb season to finish third. Our ladies’ teams found success in the Bowls Wiltshire League, finishing second in Division 2. The ladies were also placed well enough to stay in Division 1 of the Norwest Ladies League.
There were many entries into county and national competitions, with three of our members making it to Finals Weekend at Devizes, with Karen Beaney winning the Ladies’ Unbadged Singles; Andy Moore becoming Champion of Champions and Richard George runner up in the Men’s Unbadged. We are extremely proud of them all.
We had a great Captain’s Day in August, with a fancy-dress theme. Our Ladies’ captain, Claire Edwards stole the show as Cruella de Ville. We have also introduced some of the staff from Asda to the game of bowls and we thank them for their donation to our raffle.
9th and 10th of September brought us yet another hot Finals Weekend where we not only played 13 finals but we also entertained a visiting team from Guernsey in a friendly. The season is not over for three of our Men’s Lions Team; they play in the final of the Wilson Trophy to be played at Melksham Avon Bowls Club.
2024 marks our centenary year, we’ve lots planned so watch this space!!
