MELKSHAM Carnival committee has shared photos from carnivals gone by as they continue their appeal to the community to share their old photos, memorabilia and stories of previous carnivals.
The oldest photo is estimated to be from around 1956 and shows the Spencers Sports Club float travelling past crowds of jubilant locals outside the Liberal Club on Bank Street. Other highlights include images of the carnival royalty from1963 and the Melksham Swimming Club float celebrating ‘days gone by’ in the 1970s.
The committee has been building up a history of Melksham Carnival and its royalty for some time and are hoping that there are still some hidden gems that are yet to be discovered.
Carnival committee member, Christine York said, “Information is very patchy at the moment about previous carnivals and we are keen for this information not to disappear. If people have anything to share, or can help provide any more information about the photos we already have, we would be delighted to hear from them.”
Anyone with something to share about the carnival’s past can visit Andy York Photography in the Littebrook Centre and speak to Christine. The committee would like to stress that copies of photographs can be made if someone wants to keep the original.
