  • Charities receive grants funding boost

Local charities and volunteer groups have been awarded a combined total of more than £5,800 in community grants from Melksham Town Council.

Grants were approved at the recent Community Development Grants Committee to support organisations delivering vital services and positive opportunities for residents across the town.

The grant recipients include groups and charities working to improve wellbeing, reduce isolation, support families, enhance digital access and strengthen community resilience.

Groups and charities awarded a grant include Melksham Foodbank & Lifeline CIO, which was given £1,000 to fund breakfasts for 180 people. Melksham Lions were awarded £559.98 to fund repairs that were needed on the Santa sleigh.

  • Concerns raised over self-storage units

Councillors have raised concerns over self-storage units installed on land off Scotland Road, part of the former Cooper Tires site.

Around 20 units have already been installed on the land and are being operated by Brant Storage for public use. A retrospective planning application for 72 units has since been submitted to Wiltshire Council.

Cllr Saffi Rabey said an application has now been submitted after Brant Storage did not realise planning permission was required.

The plans were discussed at Melksham Town Council’s Economic Development and Planning Committee meeting in December.

The land forms part of the former Cooper Tires site and is being leased from the current landowner, who purchased the whole site earlier this year. This section of land is not allocated for housing, and access is off Scotland Road.

  • Melksham writer’s debut novel shines light on marginalised people

A Melksham author has released her debut novel, highlighting themes including disability and mental health.

Judetta Whyte, who has lived in Melksham since 2005, recently released Perpetual Limitations, a story challenging perceptions of disability, identity and inner strength.

“The book follows Samira, a young woman living with physical impairments, as she transcends not only her bodily constraints but also the spiritual, emotional and societal barriers imposed upon her,” said Judetta. “Guided by the enigmatic Sage and accompanied by Florence, Samira embarks on a transformative quest, one that begins as a personal struggle and evolves into a profound confrontation with fate, cruelty, and the fragile hope of humanity.”

  • Which Wiltshire roads will be gritted tonight?

With more snow and ice forecast, Wiltshire Council’s gritting team will be back in action tonight. The 24-strong fleet of gritters helps make driving on hundreds of miles of roads across the county safer for motorists. Primary routes are those that carry the highest amount of traffic and are essential for emergency services.

  • Lib Dems fail in bid to secure £2.5 million for Trowbridge car park deal

The Liberal Democrat administration at Wiltshire Council has failed in its bid to secure £2.5 million to pay a shopping centre owner to take a dilapidated multi-storey car park in Trowbridge off their hands.

The council’s cabinet had previously voted to hand the owner of Castle Place shopping centre up to £2.5 million in stages to take on the adjoining St Stephen’s Place car park, demolish it and the shopping centre, and redevelop the site.

But they needed the agreement of full council to release the money, with Melksham councillors among those involved in the decision.

  • Melksham News readers help raise nearly £2,000 for local hospice

Readers of the Melksham News have raised £1,947 for Dorothy House Hospice Care through donations made for messages in the newspaper’s Family Messages column.

The funds were raised during 2025 by readers of the Melksham News and its sister publications, the White Horse News in Westbury, the Warminster Journal and the Frome Times.

Readers are invited to make a donation to the hospice when submitting a message in the Family Messages column, with all proceeds going directly to support the local charity. This year’s total exceeds the 2024 figure of £1,575.

Manager at the Dorothy House charity shop in Melksham, Ula, said, “These funds are vital because they are for running the hospice, for the nurses, for the staff, for the shops to be able to continue operating for many volunteers, and to help Dorothy House deliver the services we provide.

“We are very grateful. Thank you, Melksham News.”

  • School cleaner retires after 41 years

A long-standing cleaner at Melksham Oak Community School has retired after 41 years.

Vera Petty retired on 19th December after more than four decades serving the school community. A party was held at the school to celebrate her retirement.

Now 82, Vera started working at the school, formerly George Ward School, in her 40s as a dinner lady. When the school relocated and became Melksham Oak Community School, she was made a cleaning supervisor.

She said, “I shall miss the company and I have enjoyed it for the 41 years I have been there. It has also been nice to see the students grow. You see them when they are there, then you see the ones who have left, and they usually come back to do sports and they say, ‘I remember you.’”

Vera’s daughter, Marcia, has now taken over the role. She said, “I have met a lot of nice people and teachers; I have always got on well with everybody.”

  • Questions raised over town centre planters

Questions have been raised about planters installed across Melksham town centre after it emerged they were put in place before formal permission had been granted, with concerns also raised about consultation and cost.

The planters were installed at various locations on 25th September, with trees added in December. Wiltshire Council has confirmed that formal permission was not granted until 30th October. Residents had previously raised concerns that some of the planters were obstructing visibility for road users.

When asked about the approvals, Melksham Town Council told Melksham News that permission had been granted on 26th September. Wiltshire Council confirmed that consent was only issued on 30th October. Melksham News asked the town council why incorrect information had been provided, but no response was received.

The planters were installed as part of the Wiltshire Towns Programme, which provides funding for town centre improvements.
