Teenage singer makes final in rising star contest

A MELKSHAM Oak student and The Pilot open mic regular has made it to the regional finals of the national TeenStar singing competition.

Heather Kerr, 15, performed her own composition ‘Sticks and Stones’ to win her place at the final next month.

Originally part of a duo with her guitarist friend Megan, Heather now performs solo, and has been singing at The Pilot open mic nights in Bowerhill since last year.

Organiser Mel Austin said, “I was disappointed when the duo split up because I thought they showed great potential, but I have to say Heather has really blossomed as a solo performer and a songwriter since the break.”

Heather will now perform in the final at the Anson Rooms in Bristol in April, when she plans to sing another original song.

The TeenStar competition has supported the careers of many successful young musicians including Birdy, Lucy Spraggon and Luke Friend.  TeenStar saw over 8,000 acts audition last year in its search for the UK’s best singers, singer-songwriters and rappers aged 19 or under. Heather Kerr will be the third finalist from The Pilot’s open mic stage, following in the footsteps of Courtney Buchanan in 2013, and Izzy Felstead last year.

Mel runs the Pilot Music Nights every third Wednesday of the month in order to give young teens the chance to perform in public, try out their own material and practise for such contests.

Although the Open Mic slots are open to all ages, it is younger teens who would not normally have a chance to perform in public who are the target for support. The evenings intend not just to give them a chance  to perform, but also encouragement to enter competitions, perform on radio and at larger public events, as well as write, record and send original material to publishing and record companies.

All the support is given for free with just a small cost for recording and duplication of CDs. In the past two years Courtney and Izzy have both released debut albums and Courtney is currently working on her second, whilst Izzy is progressing in a new national songwriting competition with her original composition, ‘Spaces’.

For more information on the gigs and the support available, contact Mel Austin at Melodious Music – 01225 705866, or melaustin100@gmail.com.

  • Construction begins on new Melksham care home

A new care home in Melksham is under construction on land at Longleaze Lane.

The 80-bed care home, close to Spa Medical Centre, is due to open in January 2027 providing specialist dementia care and nursing care for older people to the local community. It will be run by The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT).

Director at OSJCT, Louise Axtell, said, “It is exciting to see our new home coming to life and I am looking forward to welcoming the local community to our open day. A brand-new care home in the area will bring much needed dementia and nursing beds to Wiltshire.

“Our home benefits from a number of enhanced features to aid our person-centred care, and we look forward to welcoming our first residents and their loved ones in January.”

  • Outdoor education space opens at Melksham Oak

A new outdoor education space has opened at Melksham Oak Community School designed to give pupils meaningful opportunities to learn, grow and connect with nature.

The space will allow students access to a dedicated outdoor learning environment where they can take part in a range of activities including team-building challenges, environmental projects, bushcraft and practical life-skills development.

Staff involved in the project say the provision will play an important role in supporting students who benefit from practical and experiential learning approaches.

Associate Headteacher Mrs Clark, said, “Learning doesn’t only happen inside the classroom. This space will allow our pupils to explore, be curious, discover and grow – learning not only about the world around them but about themselves within it. We’re grateful to everyone who supported the project and helped make it possible. A special mention to Mr Lavery for his passion and dedication.”

  • Plans for additional 275 homes in Melksham East

Plans for 275 new homes on land east of Blackmore Farm have been shared, with residents encouraged to give their views.

The public consultation by Gleeson Land seeks feedback on plans for a mix of housing types and sizes, with 30% proposed as affordable properties. The consultation is being held ahead of a planning application being submitted.

The development is proposed to adjoin a scheme of 500 houses on land at Blackmore Farm, off Sandridge Common, which was approved by Wiltshire Council last year. It would also adjoin houses on Lopes Close and Blackmore House to the north, with access to the site proposed via a new T-junction from Sandridge Common.

  • Melksham resident’s travel challenge exposes accessibility barriers

A Melksham resident with a spinal cord injury has been part of a challenge to test the accessibility of public transport.

Chris Davis, who uses a wheelchair, was one of six people with spinal cord injuries from across the UK challenged to plan and complete a journey to central London within 48 hours, using at least two forms of public transport, including trains, buses or the tube.

Each participant was required to map their own route, navigate unexpected barriers and document their experience using video diaries and a detailed scorecard to assess accessibility at every stage.

The challenge was organised by the Spinal Injuries Association, of which Chris is a volunteer. He said, “Our message is that accessible travel can be challenging but it shouldn’t put you off from trying.”

  • Local lettings expert invites Melksham landlords to Renters’ Rights Act evening

With sweeping changes to rental legislation on the horizon, one Melksham property professional is stepping forward to help local landlords understand what lies ahead.

Alistair Saunders, Director of Blueleaf Property, has been managing rental homes across Melksham and the surrounding areas for more than 15 years. Over that time, he has built a reputation for giving clear, honest advice to landlords navigating an increasingly complex lettings landscape.

Now, with the upcoming Renters’ Rights Act set to reshape the private rental sector, Alistair believes landlords need practical guidance more than ever.

“The legislation coming through will represent one of the most significant changes the industry has seen in decades,” he explains. “Many landlords are hearing bits and pieces in the media but aren’t always sure what it actually means for them and their properties.”

The Renters’ Rights Act Landlord Information Evening takes place at The Kings Arms Hotel, Melksham, on Monday 16th March starting at 5:30pm and is a FREE to attend event.

  • Kieran Baggs returns as Melksham Town manager

Melksham Town Football Club have announced the return of former boss Kieran Baggs as First Team Manager, following the departure of Stuart Fleetwood last week.

Kieran previously led the club to promotion from the Western League back in 2018 and now returns to Melksham for a crucial end-of-season run-in. With just nine games remaining, Town currently sit 19th in the Southern League, in one of the relegation places, following a 3–2 home defeat to Brixham last weekend.

Kieran joins from Paulton Rovers who currently lie fourth in the Western League Premier Division, and will be joined by assistant manager Jamie Lyons and his backroom staff.

Speaking to Melksham News this week, Club Chairman Adam Young said Kieran had already had a big impact around the club. “His ability as a coach, as a manager, is exactly what we need at this stage of the season. We’ve got nine games left, 27 points to play for and I’m confident he can help us find the wins we need to stay in the Southern League.”
