  • Wiltshire Council leader blocks questions on media ban, sparking concerns over democracy. Democracy at Wiltshire Council is under threat, according to local councillor Jon Hubbard, who has criticised Conservative council leader Richard Clewer for refusing to allow elected members to ask unscheduled questions at a recent Cabinet meeting. Cllr Hubbard, representing Melksham, was barred from raising urgent concerns over the council’s decision to stop engaging with Wiltshire Publications, publishers of Melksham News, who have been accused by the council of “biased reporting.” The decision to silence questions unless submitted in advance, described by Cllr Hubbard as unprecedented, prevented him from seeking clarity on what policies, if any, informed the council’s decision to stop engaging with the publisher and what recognised standards were used to assess the so-called bias. A thriving nature reserve in the heart of Melksham has received three prestigious awards, recognising it as a peaceful haven of nature. Conigre Mead Nature Reserve, accessible from Sainsbury’s car park and the town cemetery, is a mix of ponds, wildflower-rich grassland and shrubs and provides local people with a natural environment to enjoy, maintained by volunteers. Recently, the reserve was awarded the highest Level 5 Outstanding status in the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ Awards and two South West in Bloom Discretionary Special Awards - The Suttons Seed Cup for an outstanding area of nature conservation and the CPRE Environmental Award.   • Councillors’ Corner. It seems that 2024 has been a year of choices, or elections in a political context. The council elections in May saw many councils change hands from one party to another, or from single party control to some form of coalition. During the general election in July, we had the opportunity to choose who would be our MP and that choice exercised across 635 constituencies led to the formation of a new government. Today, as I write this column, the chancellor of the exchequer has just finished announcing her budget, thus expressing the government’s choices about economic policies that will shape our country’s development.   • Melksham resident raises funds to support Palestinians. A Melksham resident is raising funds for Palestinians affected by the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict by selling a variety of fair trade goods. Joan Phelan, along with a friend, sells fair trade Palestinian products - including olive oil, dates, almonds and nuts - at events across the area. “All the goods we sell are fair trade and directly support Palestinian farmers and their families,” Joan said. “We’re often invited to set up our stall at fair trade and Palestine-focused events. We’ve been especially active recently because of everything that’s been happening.” Joan’s connection with Palestine began during her university years in 1991 when she spent time in the region.   • Cubs complete in annual chess tournament. Cubs from ten different packs within the Wiltshire West District took part in the annual chess tournament, which took place earlier this month at the Melksham headquarters.
