ON Sunday 27th April 2014 Melksham Baptist Church will be celebrating its 345th anniversary.
Organisers say, “Our guest preacher at the 10.30am service that day will be Rev Roland Wort BA BSc RN HCQ. He will bring an Anniversary message to the Church and will also talk about his life and work in the Royal Navy and his new Royal Appointment.
“Mr Wort studied mathematics at Cardiff University then trained for the Baptist ministry at Spurgeons College. He was minister of Perry Rise Baptist Church, Forest Hill, in London for eight years.
“Mr Wort then became a chaplain in the Royal Navy where he has served for more than 20 years and is based currently at HMS Collingwood, a training establishment in Fareham, Hampshire.
“During his time ashore and afloat, he has worked in both the Portsmouth and Plymouth areas, deployed in destroyers and frigates to The Gulf, South Atlantic, Mediterranean, Far East and Caribbean, and has been seconded to the US Navy and the Royal Australian Navy.
“The Rev Roland Wort has recently been appointed as an Honorary Chaplain to Her Majesty the Queen and may be asked to officiate in special services in addition to his naval service.”
He says, “It is a great honour to be nominated for this prestigious appointment. I look forward to the extra responsibility and pray that I will fulfil the role with the dignity and gravitas it demands.”
He and his wife Sharon, currently live in Winchester and have two grown up daughters.
