Motorsport passion runs deep in one local family, as 14-year-old Emily Freeth has become the third generation to win a prestigious title at the Devizes and District Motor Club (DDMC) awards night.
Emily, who has followed in the footsteps of both her nan, Pam Burton from Melksham, and her aunt, Amy Fletcher, was crowned Ladies’ Champion, a title her nan won in 1987. She also claimed the Beginner Novice Navigator Champion and the Best 12 Car Organisers award.
“I felt surprised when winning the award and proud of my achievements in 2024,” said Emily. “I want to follow in my family’s footsteps and do more.”
Emily’s grandmother, Pam, was a trailblazer for women in the sport, and her influence continued through Amy Fletcher, who also won the Ladies’ Champion title. Now, with Emily taking the title too, the family’s legacy in motorsport has spanned nearly four decades.
Amy, who is now vice chair of the club, said, “DDMC is well known for its inclusive and welcoming environment, bringing together motorsport enthusiasts from Wiltshire and beyond. The club offers opportunities for participants of all levels, whether as drivers, navigators, marshals, or event organisers.
“Emily’s achievements prove that age is no barrier to success in motorsport. With a passion for the sport and a strong family legacy behind her, she is undoubtedly a rising star in the world of rallying.”
Emily, who has a strong passion for motorsport, will soon take part in her first driving event, known as autosolo, which involves navigating a timed course around cones on a private tarmac or sealed surface.
Beyond her skills as a navigator, Emily has also shown a talent for event organisation. Alongside her father, Paul Freeth, she received the Best 12 Car Organisers award, recognising their dedication in planning and running the club’s popular 12 Car rallies—events known for their challenge and excitement.
“I hope that motorsport will help me in the future to be a safe driver when on the road,” Emily added.
