22nd November

Melksham Town 2-0 Bideford AFC

In what was officially Stuart Fleetwood’s first game inside the dugout, Melksham welcomed visitors Bideford to a wet Meads of Melksham Community football stadium.

For much of the first half, it was a very even affair. Both sides struggling for confidence near the bottom of the table but as the half wore on, Melksham gradually grew into the game.

Their first clear chance fell in the 34th minute – a promising cross from the right by Will Christopher found a perfect opening, yet poor communication between Lawrence and Stan Wyatt meant the opportunity was wasted.

Then, just two minutes later, Melksham struck. A similar build-up this time down the right via Olly Mehew ended with a square ball to Jamal Lawrence, who was unmarked six yards out to tap home.

The second half saw Bideford press for an equaliser, but despite their efforts, they lacked cutting edge and cohesion in the final third. Meanwhile, Melksham defended bravely and grew in confidence as the clock ticked down.

With stoppage time creeping in, Lawrence struck again rounding the GK to wrap up the win and give Melksham a much-needed two-goal cushion. The game finished 2-0, Melksham’s first win in 10 and the first under Fleetwood and Gillespie.

The main takeaways from the game is the new style of play, a much more possession-based game, so much more pleasing to the eye with many supporters walking away surprised but happy with the way the Town had played.

Wiltshire Premier Shield

Melksham Town 3-1 Highworth Town

A young Melksham side cruised to a well-deserved 3-1 victory over Highworth Town to secure their spot in the Wiltshire Premier Shield Semi Final.

Melksham immediately took control of the game, playing a refreshing brand of passing football which allowed them to dictate play effortlessly.

This led to a masterpiece of a goal, which came from a blistering through ball from Leon Hardman who put Jamal Lawrence in to finish the job.  The goal was a result of a bewitching sequence of passes from Melksham, with Highworth unable to touch the ball since kick off.

Just as Melksham thought they’d be heading down the tunnel with a comfortable 1-0 lead at the interval, a loss of concentration in the Melksham defence saw the ball bundled in by Highworth’s Rhys Wells to give his side a leveller on the stroke of the half-time whistle.

Melksham’s second of the game was a stunning volley from Olly Mehew who connected perfectly with Nathan Davis’s piercing cross. The Melksham forward seamlessly guided the ball into the far corner to reestablish his side’s lead.

A spark of young brilliance from Melksham’s Leon Hardman gave Melksham their third and final goal of the game. After tirelessly chasing the ball into the final third, he managed to dribble away from the keeper; dragging him out of goal. He then looked up and selflessly crossed an inch perfect ball into Levi Irving who smashed it past the keeper to put the game to bed.

Bashley 0-1 Melksham Town

It was a gritty, tight contest at Veho Community Stadium, but Melksham Town left with all three points thanks to a late, dramatic winner.

From the off, Bashley looked to impose themselves. The home side carved out the first real chance just before half-time but a strike drifted wide of the post.

Despite that pressure, Melksham’s defence stood firm, with the back four and goalkeeper Forster frustrating Bashley and keeping the match goalless into the break.

Melksham remained organised, disciplined and compact at the back – giving little away despite sustained home pressure.

As the clock ticked down, and it looked like a draw was on the cards, Melksham struck in the dying minutes of the game, Anton Dworzak, a new signing who had an impressive game up to this point, unleashed an incredible strike that found the top corner to secure all three points for the visitors.

Melksham had to absorb a lot of pressure on a very wet and muddy pitch and were solid defensively, hitting on the break.

This was Melksham’s third win on the bounce after such a poor run of form and is a true testament to the character and resilience of the players.

Stuart Fleetwood has brought a new playing style to the group which the players are buying into it and it has shown with the recent performances.

MOTM: Anton Dworzak

  • New bells to be installed at Melksham church

A Melksham church is having two additional bells installed, which will be available for the public to view this week before being hung in the church tower.

The new bells will be installed at St Michael’s Church and feature a cypher in celebration of the Coronation of King Charles III. “We currently have a ‘Ring of 8’ bells which will be augmented to become a ‘Ring of 10’ bells,” said churchwarden Peter Maslen.

The bells will be brought into the church at ground level, where they will be on view to the public on Friday 5th December and Saturday 6th December. The church will be open from 10am to 4pm on Friday and 10am to 12pm on Saturday.

  • Melksham Air Cadets left in the dark over building closure

Residents have voiced frustration over the ongoing closure of the 2385 Melksham Squadron Air Cadets building in Bowerhill, which has left local cadets travelling to Bradford-on-Avon for their twice-weekly meetings.

Up to 20 cadets are being transported by minibus or with parents to gather in a single room at the Bradford-on-Avon squadron. Residents say this is not a suitable long-term arrangement due to transport difficulties, lack of space and limited facilities, and they fear numbers are now declining from what was once a thriving squadron of more than 60 young people.

The building at Lancaster Road was closed in February after a safety report advised that remedial work was needed. Members said they were told in March that refurbishment would go ahead and that funding had been set aside.

In August the squadron was told that refurbishment would take place in October/November. But in September, when the contents of the building were due to be transferred to storage, this was cancelled at the last moment and the squadron was told that the building was now closed indefinitely, with no reason given.

  • Melksham organ donor continues helping those in need

A man from Melksham, who donated his kidney to save his friend’s life, is undertaking more challenges to help people in need.

Tim Swinburn underwent a kidney transplant in September to save his friend, Clare Brixey, who was on dialysis, after a kidney transplant she had several years ago was failing. Since the surgery, both Tim and Clare have recovered well and they are now focussing on how to help other people.

On Christmas Day, Tim, who is a support worker for the Salvation Army, will ‘Walk to Work for Christmas.’ He plans to walk 24 miles from his home in Melksham to Booth House in Swindon, where he provides housing and support to people experiencing homelessness. He is raising funds to improve opportunities for the people he supports.

Then in February, Tim is planning a sponsored walk from Southmead Hospital in Bristol to Booth House, Swindon, to raise funds for dialysis machines at the renal unit where he and Clare had surgery.

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

A Fuller story from Neston Park

The Edwardians loved a good gossip, especially when it came to divorce because it was usually predicated by scandal. And the newspapers of the time didn’t disappoint.

Roland Forestier-Walker and Olive Bassett had married in 1904 and lived at the Manor House in Cliffe Pypard. Both coming from well-respected families, Olive was also financially secure, receiving £3,000 a year. (An inheritance from her father who had died in 1903; roughly £350,000 a year in today’s money).

Lieut-Colonel R S Forestier-Walker of the Monmouthshire Royal Engineers had been deployed to France in 1914. While still serving overseas during World War I, he received a letter from his wife, Olive, announcing her infidelity and offering an uncontested divorce and a settlement of £500 per year. Although she would not say who her lover was, it was discovered that Olive and her maid’s brother, Frederick Jones, had been cohabiting at Fisher-hill, North Chapel, Sussex from October 1915 until May 1916.

  • Top praise for primary school in latest inspection

A local primary school has received top praise following a Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS).

Shaw Church of England Primary School was commended for ‘enabling pupils and adults to flourish’ and being a ‘warm, welcoming and nurturing school’ in the SIAMS inspection report, which considers the impact of a church school’s Christian vision on pupils and adults.

Inspectors commended leaders for ensuring that the school’s Christian vision is a ‘lived reality’ where adults and pupils are able to ‘let their light shine’.
