WINTER is coming and with it, colder weather and darker evenings, but also crisp sunny days, cosy log fires and winter sports.
One of the biggest challenges to our eyes in winter is glare. Glare is everywhere. It’s there when we go out into bright sunlight, when we drive with headlights at night and when work under office lighting. It’s reflected on wet roads, emitted from computer screens and given off by mobiles.
Sure signs of glare include shielding your eyes, squinting or regularly closing your eyes to give them a rest. You may feel your eyes are tired, stinging or that you can’t always see clearly. If this sounds like you, it’s time to stop suffering and start giving your eyes a break.
At Nixon and Shaw Opticians our professional staff will talk you through how to get the best vision, protect your eyes, and reduce discomfort this winter.
Anti-reflection coating on your glasses can reduce the effect of glare when driving. The ‘En-Route’ range of lenses contain filters to reduce glare, enhance contrast and colour perception for daytime and night driving. They are designed to be especially effective against super-bright Xenon headlights that are increasingly used in new cars.
Polarised sunglass lenses eliminate bright reflections from water, so are ideal for reducing sun glare reflected from a wet road, water or snow, and in sports like skiing, fishing and sailing.
Lenses that darken automatically in sunlight (photochromic) are another good option if you are particularly light sensitive; and you don’t have to swap between your normal glasses and sunglasses.
In winter, we will more often be using screens in artificial light. The contrast in brightness between the screen and the surrounding lighting can cause eyestrain as the eye has to continually adjust between the different light levels.
