TOWN travelled to Mousehole, six miles from Land’s End, for a Southern League fixture on Saturday 17th February, but it was a wasted trip, reports club chairman Darren Perrin.
The players went down on Friday and stayed in Hayle to give the team the best preparation possible. But, at 1.30pm on Saturday the referee postponed the match due to a waterlogged pitch, meaning that the club suffered significant losses, a wasted eight-hour round trip and another visit to Mousehole now on a Tuesday evening, with a 2pm leave and not returning much before 2am on Wednesday morning.
We were then the hosts to Willand Rovers on Saturday 24th February, looking to put an end to four consecutive defeats in what has been a horrid month result-wise for the club.
The pitch was heavy, sticky but all credit goes to the ground staff as the pitch was certainly playable. In front of a healthy crowd of 376, Town should have been awarded a penalty in the very first minute for a pull back on Ralph Graham. Town went close again through Ben Brooks, with Willand looking a threat from set pieces. Half time 0 – 0.
In the second half, both sides cancelled each other out although Town went close when they hit the outside of the post and again in the 90th minute when a huge shout for a penalty on Albie Hopkins was waved away by the referee. Final score 0 – 0.
A much-improved performance by Town and not only nice to keep a clean sheet but to finally put an end to the losing run.
However, the Town face a daunting week of travel, with away games to Wimborne on Tuesday 27th February, followed by Cribbs on Saturday 2nd March, and a trip to Tavistock on Wednesday 6th March. It is a big ask for the players but one you have to face when you play this standard of football.
