MELKSHAM Town Football Club made history earlier this month making its debut in the Southern League – the highest level of football the club has ever competed at.
Much to the delight of the 432 strong home crowd at the infiLED arena at Oakfields on Saturday 18th August, Town defeated league favourites Evesham United, 1-0.
The winning goal came in the 25th minute from Neikell Plummer, who joined the team before the new season began.
“We had a great crowd,” said Town’s manager Kieran Baggs. “Everyone knew that it was going to be tough playing Evesham, they are the favourites and are expected to be up there at the top of the league at the end of the season. The task was huge – the adrenaline and nerves were high.
“It was a fully deserved victory – we could have scored another two or three goals. Just to get the first game under our belts was a nice feeling.
“Playing at this level has been a long time coming for the club, so the game against Evesham had a special feeling about it – almost like a cup final day.
“We played better on the pitch on the day against Evesham – causing an upset in the league, which will hopefully be the first of many. We now need to keep progressing Melksham in the league, getting used to playing at this standard – but also enjoying it.
“I feel very lucky to have such a great team of players, support from the club and fantastic support from the fans. I speak to the supporters at each game and its refreshing to hear that they believe in what we are doing as a club.
“For me it’s been a quick progression in my career as manager for Melksham – to get promotion last season and the fantastic run in the FA Vase – I’m still learning on the job, I’m only 29-years-old and I’m still making mistakes, but I’m taking it all in my stride and I am so thankful for all the support that I get.”
