ST Barnabas Church in Beanacre is inviting the community to take part in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations by helping them to plant commemorative trees in the cricket field.
The church has received a donation of 240 whips to plant, but has ambitions to plant over 500 trees, and is appealing for donations to help raise enough money to cover the costs of purchasing the trees.
They plan to plant the 240 whips on Saturday 12th March from 10am. They are asking volunteers to sign up to help and bring wellies, a spade, and enthusiasm!
“We’ll provide the rest!” says the church.
For more information and to sign up to volunteer, visit the website: www.melksham.church/jubilee
The church continues, “To mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year in 2022 the Woodland Trust is administering a scheme called ‘the Queen’s Green Canopy’. This aims to plant 3million trees throughout the UK and map where they have been planted.
“St Barnabas Church in Beanacre embraces this initiative and wishes to combine it with the re-wilding of the cricket field.
“We have been fortunate to secure 240 ‘whips’ (the correct term for very small baby trees) from the Woodland Trust thanks to a Beanacre resident.
“However, we have room for, and would really like to plant, 500 or more trees!
“But of course, even though the trees will be planted by volunteers, further trees and their associated protection costs money, so we are appealing for help.
“The cost of one whip, a wooden stake, a biodegradable tree protector tube and a biodegradable weed suppressing mat comes to a total of £5.
“We would welcome monetary donations in order to achieve our ambitious aim. Perhaps you may like to be a part of the Platinum Jubilee, commemorate a loved one, celebrate the birth of a child, give as a living present, mark an anniversary of your own, salve your environmental conscience or put this towards reducing your personal carbon footprint?
