A CHILDMINDER and mum-of-four from Atworth is arranging a ‘slow down’ demonstration after becoming increasing concerned about speeding traffic in the village.
Sarah Horrell was inspired to do something after seeing no success in efforts to calm passing vehicles. She will be part of a demonstration arranged for Saturday 12th Sept.
Sarah said, “The idea of a demonstration started as a flippant Facebook post, but people ran with it!
“Feeling is high in the village regarding road safety as there have been numerous near misses caused by speeding and dangerous driving. We don’t want the council to wait until there’s a fatality to do something about traffic calming.
“I walk children up to school on Bradford Road each school day and I’m shocked daily by the fact that most people don’t even slow down when a woman is trying to cross the road with a double buggy and several children waiting.
“The village has tried in recent years to bring concerns to the attention of the council but to no avail. An organisation known as ATAG was also set up but made little progress.
“We have a number of ideas but my favourite is for Bath Road to be lined with people with signs and banners bringing drivers’ attention to the 30mph speed limit.
“Hopefully people getting involved will also take the time to write to the council and our local MP.”
The protest group will discuss the details of the demonstration at a meeting on Friday 4th September at 6.30pm in the skittle alley of the White Hart.
