BOWERHILL will be a greener and more colourful place next year thanks to the work of volunteers who planted a number of trees and bulbs in the area.
Cadets from Melksham’s Air Cadet Squadron (2385) planted 80 trees in the Bowerhill Sports Field, whilst members of Bowerhill Residents Action Group (BRAG) planted a mixture of crocus, English bluebells and wild daffodils bulbs in front of the heritage turbine on the Bowerhill Industrial Estate.
The parish clerk for Melksham Without Parish Council said, “It was nice to see the cadets planting in the shadow of the old RAF hangers. This is their third time doing it along this stretch, with the aim to grow a line of trees along the path of the new portal road.
“The trees were all supplied free of charge from the Woodland Trust for community tree planting. Another 20 trees are being planted by Bowerhill residents in the residential area.
“At the same time, BRAG planted lots of bulbs in front of the heritage turbine. The parish council had been given £191.14 from the John Chamberlain Sawtell estate (The Sawtell family ran the old feather factory on Old Broughton Road in Melksham) towards the care of the heritage turbine, which was renovated by the parish council in 2009, and the fund paid for the bulbs. They also planted a few bulbs round the memorial tree and bench for ex-councillor Mike Mills, who died in 2018.”
