Wiltshire Council has reassured communities that they are doing all they can to prepare for winter as heavy rain brings a greater risk of flooding.
The council has called on community groups and residents to be ready to respond to the impact of stormy weather.
Steve Pope, communications officer, Wiltshire Council reported, “We are working to keep Wiltshire roads free from flood water by doubling to six the number of tankers emptying road gullies across the county.
“Our priority is to keep the busiest roads clear and all gullies on the county’s A roads are expected to be emptied by the end of December. Those gullies on B, C and unclassified roads will be cleared by March 2015.
“Wiltshire Council is ready to respond in an emergency to carry out further clearing to tackle flash flooding.
“Heavy downpours can soon wash soil and other material into Wiltshire’s road gully network as the volume of water exceeds normal levels, blocking gullies which had been previously cleared, as happened on several occasions during the spring and summer.
“Wiltshire Council understands the impact and distress caused by flooding and works with local communities through the Operational Flood Working Groups to improve drainage and flood alleviation schemes.
“We are realistic about what can be achieved when tackling this sudden, extreme weather and offer help and support, but the responsibility for protecting private property rests with owners.
“The council encourages residents to consider the impact of severe weather and to ensure private gullies are clear and empty, that water flow systems are not obstructed and people have sandbags.
“Residents can clear gullies blocked with leaves or grass but if the problem is more serious or people have other concerns this can be reported to Wilshire Council:
