WILTSHIRE Police report that between 29th January and 4th February unknown persons have set fire to two recycle bins and a clothing recycling container in Rowley Place Melksham.
In a separate incident, but at some time during the above dates, a children’s slide on the Queensway Recreational Play Park was set alight.
On each occasion fire crews attended to prevent significant damage being caused.
Acting Sergeant Kane Fulbrook-Smith of Melksham Neighbourhood Policing Team said, “This act of arson is one of stupidity, and causes unnecessary alarm and distress to local residents; also the inconsiderate usage of the play equipment can have serious consequences if not tackled quickly.
“This is mindless anti-social behaviour which detracts emergency services time from dealing with genuine reports instead of chasing around after individuals who get a kick out of this meaningless act of criminality.”
A spokesperson from Selwood Housing said, “We are working closely with Wiltshire Police to try and resolve the issues caused by arson on our estates. The safety and security of our tenants and the wider community is really important to us.”
Acting Sergeant Fulbrook-Smith wants to reassure residents and the local community that patrols have been stepped up in the area, and Melksham NPT are appealing for witnesses to come forward with any information that can assist with their enquiries to identify any suspect/s and make them accountable for their actions. This can be done in person, using 101 or Crime Stoppers 0800-555-111.
