CONSTRUCTION work started at Woolmore Farm this week on Melksham’s brand new multi-million pound football and rugby facilities.
Beard Construction, who will build the new clubhouse, have now begun work on the site near Snowberry Lane.
Melksham Town Football Club and Melksham Rugby Club will move onto the new state-of-the-art grounds to make way for the community campus at their current grounds at Melksham House.
Melksham town councillor and area board member Jon Hubbard said, “Work on Woolmore Farm is now under way. The plans are all marked out and diggers are on site. Wiltshire Council’s £7million investment means that Melksham’s football and rugby clubs will have a magnificent facility; one of, if not the best in Wiltshire.”
The facility upgrade, costing just under £7million, is set to include a 256-seater stadium, club house, 11 football pitches and four rugby pitches, with Melksham Football Club and Melksham Rugby Club sharing the site.
Work was scheduled to begin last year but the discovery of great crested newts – a protected species – meant that work was delayed until the animals could be removed from the area.
The setback cost a title-winning Melksham Town FC their league promotion because the Conigre was not up to Southern League standards.
Work is expected to begin on the Melksham House aspect of the campus after the sports clubs move to Woolmore Farm next year. Completion of the campus is forecast for late 2017.
