Work to transform and improve Melksham’s Market Place will begin at the end of January as part of Wiltshire Council’s plans to develop local facilities, services and community areas.
The works, expected to be completed in around six months, will enhance the attractiveness of the space; provide a pedestrianised zone and a bespoke market square. Additionally, the redesign will improve vehicular and pedestrian access to the Melksham House site, which will be home to the new state-of-the-art Health and Wellbeing Centre, outdoor clubs and St Damien’s GP surgery.
The work will be completed in phases to ensure access to homes, businesses and Melksham House is maintained throughout the construction period with minimum disruption.
The local market will be locating to Church Street during the works and the taxi rank will move to the High Street next to Lloyds Bank.
John Thomson, Wiltshire Council cabinet member for communities and campuses said, “The Market Place is a focal point for the town and this investment will ensure that continues for many years to come.
“This marks the next phase of the exciting campus development and means the Market Place will be ready for the increased activity that it will bring into that area. We are sure that any short term disruption will be offset by a much improved and attractive town centre when the work is complete.”
Wiltshire Council will be contacting neighbouring residents and businesses to address any concerns that they may wish to raise and to provide a point of contact while the works are being carried out.
