A MELKSHAM man is a third of the way through a year of various challenges, all to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Robbie Newton, who is the assistant branch manager at Travis Perkins, has already taken part in the Longleat 10k, The Wiltshire 10 and Two Tunnels Railway Races 5k and 10k and so far has raised over £2,300
This weekend Robbie wil run the Bath Half Marathon (13th March), then the Devizes 10k on 20th March, followed by the London Marathon on 24th April.
Robbie said, “I always try and do at least one challenge a year. Last year was the 10 x 10k challenge dressed as a morph and the only thing I could think of at the time was running the London Marathon. After initially applying and not getting in, I then applied through work and was lucky enough to get a place, as long as I raised a minimum of £2,000.
“My friend Gary McLaughlin is a personal trainer and has drawn up a training plan for me to be ready for London. I also have a fantastic girlfriend who has been helping me with my diet plan. I have cut out alcohol, crisps, takeaways etc until after the marathon.
“With it being over 26 miles, I know I have got to put the effort in to be ready. Also, it’s knowing you are making such a difference in helping Macmillan Cancer Support continue to do their great work.
“It has been hard work going out in all weathers to make sure I get the training in, but it has been enjoyable and gets me off the sofa and out of the house!”
After the London Marathon, Robbie’s challenges include the Great Bristol 10k, Tough Mudder and the Great Manchester Run, plus a zipwire challenge.
Robbie is also hoping to organise a rematch of the Travis Perkins vs Buildbase football match which last year raised £2,000.
