NINE-year old Mya Babbage has been praised by the town council for efforts to keep the town tidy with her own litter picks.
After reading about Mya’s crusade in the Melksham News last month, mayor cllr Jon Hubbard invited her to the Town Hall to thank her and present her with her own litter picking kit, including a high-vis jacket with the title of town council’s “junior litter inspector” emblazoned on it.
“It’s absolutely amazing what you are doing,” said cllr Hubbard. “We want to say a huge thank you to you – you are so special and an inspiration.”
Mya also took the opportunity to raise her concerns with the mayor about a lack of bins in a number of alleyways, which she explained were hot spots for rubbish – feedback that the mayor took onboard.
Mya’s efforts have not gone unnoticed by local residents too – Mya’s mother Natasha Babbage, told Melksham News, that her daughter has been thanked by a number of local residents, and has been inspiring others to go out and do their bit for the community.
“It’s been really heart-warming,” said Natasha. “Mya is doing something so simple, but it is having an impact on others, and inspiring them to do something themselves.”
The Aloeric Primary School student has also created her own Instagram page for people to follow her mission to go the extra mile, “showing kindness by helping the local community, environment and charities”.
As well as continuing with her own litter picks, Mya has been spending money in charity shops to support them; has switched to shampoo bars to support the environment; and has been learning more about bug hotels. To follow Mya’s adventures, search for @ myas_miles on Instagram.
