THE additional £3million needed to build the Melksham Community Campus has been approved by Wiltshire councillors.
The additional funds, which increases the total capital budget for the campus to £20.1million, had received approval from Wiltshire Council’s cabinet members in October, but final approval was required from Wiltshire councillors to secure the funding.
The £3million boost was needed as the project was ‘over budget’ and could not be delivered within the previous approved budget.
Following the full council meeting last week, Wiltshire councillor Jon Hubbard, who is also a town councillor, said, “(I’m) pleased that Wiltshire Council has overwhelmingly voted to crack on with building Melksham Campus. This time we have the money and have the planning consent. Hopefully we will see real progress now and be open in 2021.”
The campus project, which also received planning permission last month after months of delays, is now looking to appoint a lead contractor so that work can begin at the Melksham House site next year, with construction expected to be complete by 2021.
A detailed business case for the future of Melksham House, which has caused delays to the project, will be presented at a Wiltshire Council cabinet meeting early next year.
