MELKSHAM Rugby Club hosted a special day to officially open the club’s new facilities at Oakfield Stadium last week.
With players past and present in attendance, the club welcomed special guest ex-Bath and England rugby player Lee Mears to mark the occasion by cutting a ceremonial ribbon.
About the new facilities, Lee said, “This is an amazing opportunity for you guys here at grass-roots rugby. I still remember my junior club, it’s where all my best memories are. Thank you for having me along and I hope you have many great seasons here.”
Also there to celebrate the club’s opening were Michelle Donelan MP and Deputy Mayor of Melksham, cllr Jon Hubbard.
“Every time I come (to Oakfields) I am taken aback, as it is a wonderful facility that the whole town can be proud of,” said Michelle Donelan.
“Clubs like this bring people together, they allow people to make friends that last a lifetime.
“It’s a fantastic investment into the town and I can tell you that all the other towns in my constituency, every time that I visit a sports facility, this is their envy now!”
Cllr Hubbard, added, “The building is great, the grounds are fantastic, but what really makes a facility like this are the people who use it.”
Throughout the day spectators were entertained by a number of events including two senior matches with Melksham 1st (sponsored by Carols Cabs and RB Poolman) taking on Bradford on Avon; and Melksham 2nds (sponsored by Rich Hemmings and RB Poolman) against Cricklade.
