CHAIRMAN of Avon Bowls Club, Dawn Edwards, approaches the end of her year as President, and one of the highlights will undoubtedly be Wiltshire Ladies, all under the age of 31, who won the Amy Rose Challenge Bowl for the first time.
Wiltshire Ladies attended the home of English Bowls, Leamington Spa and won the Amy Rose Challenge Bowl for the first time by beating Cornwall (also their first final) by 33-21.
Press officer, Pauline Baker reports, “And the bonus? Avon Club member Georgie Newman, who has had considerable success in the game over the last couple of years was part of the team.
“President Dawn was delighted to offer her sincere congratulations both to the team and to their manager, Marcia Hartley, next year’s Captain of Avon Bowls Club Ladies who said, ‘I am so proud of their achievement; they worked incredibly hard to gain the trophy, and their success augurs well for the future of Lawn Green Bowling not only in Wiltshire but throughout the country.’
“The semi-finals were a nail-biting affair, with Wiltshire gaining victory by 29-28 against Devon Belles while Cornwall scraped through by overcoming Northamptonshire 27-26, tension-packed indeed!
“Naturally, everybody at Avon Bowls Club was excited at the result and now wish Georgie Newman every success in the future as she embarks on her university career. She plans to keep on playing bowls, hopefully during the summer vacations.
“Meanwhile, other bowlers have been enjoying the long hot summer, in spite of some greens having suffered because of the extreme conditions, and Avon has been delighted to be hosts this year for several prestigious events, including the semi-finals of the Bowls Wiltshire Men’s 4Rink League when Chippenham Town overcame Westlecot in a close-fought contest. Last Thursday’s second semi-final between Holt and Royal Wootton Bassett resulted in a win for Holt 89-80.
“The Wilson Cup Triples match between Avon Bowls Club and Trowbridge Town turned out to be yet another game which went to the wire, with Avon winning 17-16 after an extra end, which means a place in the final at Chippenham Town on 23rd September.
“There are still several events taking place before the outdoor season closes late September, and meanwhile the imminent closure of Christie Miller Sports Centre, announced last week at the Area Board meeting will cause much sadness among local sports people who have used the centre for very many years. Roll on the Campus!!!”x
