‘Inspirational’ community volunteer, George Brown, has received an award celebrating his 20- year involvement with Melksham Community Bus.
George received his latest award from the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, William Wyldebore-Smith at the Community First AGM on 9th October.
“George’s involvement started in1999 when he attended a meeting with a group of people from Melksham Council of Community Service, the group who ran Melksham Area Community Transport,” explained David Hogg, Chair of MCCS. “They were appealing for help and support as they were concerned about their ability to continue managing the service due to ill health, a lack of active committee members and a shortage of funding.
“George, who had professional experience in the transport industry, deployed his knowledge and skill, as well as his ability to enthuse people, and suddenly MCCS was rejuvenated. George has continued with the group to this day as their transport manager.
“Expanding the operation to its current level of five buses, MCCS transports over 20,000 people per year including children from outlying isolated villages to a school in Corsham; housebound disabled and elderly to day centres, shopping outlets and social events; and day trips for local residents to popular destinations
“The people of Melksham have already recognised George as the driving force behind the successful expansion of their own lifeline, contributing towards the enrichment of their otherwise lonely existence.
“Leading by example and encouragement, he has not only rescued a service from decline, but expanded it into a thriving, professionally-run organisation.
“Most people are surprised when they learn that he is not paid for the enormous amount of time he contributes; an average of at least 16 hours per week. In addition, he chairs the Friends of Melksham Hospital & Community committee. His dedication, commitment and tireless enthusiasm belie his quiet, unassuming persona.
“Over 20,000 passengers a year, many of whom otherwise housebound, benefit from one man’s vision, drive and determination.”
George’s previous recognitions include: 2009 Melksham Town Council Civic Award; 2011 Melksham Person of the Year Award; 2013 MCCS Community Transport awarded “Most Innovative Community Transport Group” by Community First.
