Melksham Lions 2013 review

Melksham Lions Club have enjoyed a very busy year, perhaps the busiest for some time.

Ann Mobsby-Howe, on behalf of Melksham Lions reported, “We have held several fund-raising events which have enabled us to help many local charities and organisations as well as provide some ‘hands-on’ help where it has been needed.

“Some of the local causes that we have helped included: Melksham Guides Hut • West Wilts Special Needs Activity Scheme • ATC • Wiltshire Air Ambulance • SPLIT • West Wilts Scouts • Tourist Information Office • Bobby Van • The Philippines Appeal.

“The above was possible through our events which started in March on a very cold day at Leekes with an Easter Raffle. Next was The Maesteg Male Voice Choir in April. In June we held two table top sales. August saw the Farewell to Melksham House Disco which was enjoyed by everyone who attended.

“In September we launched our Lion Tombola at Melksham Food Fayre and in November we were lucky enough to have the use of a shop and held The Little Treasure Shop event, and last but not least was the Christmas Fayre and the Father Christmas Float. None of the above would not have been the success they were without the help and support of the people of Melksham and the various local businesses who are so supportive of the club.  We give a very BIG THANKYOU to you all for your marvellous support.

“2014 is going to be a very special year for the club as we celebrate our 40th birthday. The club started in 1974 and several original members are still with us today. Apart from our usual events we will be hosting an extravaganza on 31st May. This is being held at the United Reformed Church and other venues in the town centre and it will also be hosting The Town Crier Competition, so promises to be quite an event.

“Forthcoming events will include The Maesteg Male Voice Choir in the assembly hall on 12th April and the  40th Birthday Extravaganza on 31st May, and as well as the usual events that we support and take part in, we hope to be running a couple of shops as well.  So watch out for further information in the Melksham News. Melksham Lions Club, as part of Lions International, an organisation without religious or political affiliations of any kind and committed to good friendship and mutual understanding, is always looking for new members of any age or gender. We would welcome anyone who wishes to come and see us and find out more about what we do. We do appreciate that in this day and age lives can get to be very busy, but it is not that time consuming, and yes, we do have busy times, but not every week. We meet usually twice a month, the first Tuesday of the month being our business meeting and the 4th Tuesday of the month our social night, which might be going out for a meal or a talk on an interesting subject.
