SIGN up for next year’s Bath Half Marathon and raise money to support local seriously ill children with Julia’s House children’s hospice. 

The local charity has 20 places available for the event on Sunday 13th March available on a first-come first-served basis, so sign-up early to avoid disappointment. Register for your place at: www.juliashouse.org/bath-half

  • Carers walk 150 miles for armed forces charity A local care team has completed a 150-mile weighted walking challenge in aid of Help for Heroes, finishing the final mile at King George V Park in Melksham. Read more in the upcoming issue of Melksham News, out this week.
  • Domestic abuser who assaulted Melksham woman jailed A man who assaulted his partner, a woman in her 30s from Melksham, has been jailed for 19 months after admitting two assaults. Billy Conners, 26, formerly of Castle Road, Salisbury, appeared at Salisbury Crown Court on 27th July after pleading guilty to two counts of assault. He was jailed for 19 months. A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said, “In April, we received a call from the victim, a woman in her 30s from Melksham, reporting that she had been assaulted by Conners on multiple occasions, with whom she had been in a relationship with for only two months. “On 30th March, Conners assaulted the victim by biting her and spitting on her, as well as repeatedly calling her derogatory names. Two days later, Conners accused the victim of messaging other people and pushed her to the floor. “On April 2nd, Conners assaulted the victim again, kicking her to the head after pushing her to the floor, punched her in the ribs and face and again spat in her face.   • Melksham charity launches £50,000 appeal to replace ageing bus A transport charity which has been supporting residents for 30 years has launched a £50,000 appeal to replace one of its ageing buses. Melksham Area Community Transport helps elderly residents get to the shops, children travel to school and community groups attend activities, providing accessible transport for those who struggle to use conventional public transport. The charity launched the fundraiser earlier this month after one of its buses, which is 20 years old, reached the end of its working life. With a fleet of six buses, the charity runs shopper buses taking residents to Devizes, Trowbridge and Chippenham on certain days, provides transport for schools, care homes, social clubs and community organisations, and operates daily school buses.   • Play cafe thrives in heart of Melksham An interactive play cafe in Melksham is celebrating its first six months after creating a popular space for children and parents to learn through play. Mighty Minis Play Cafe, at Avonside, features themed role-play zones including a medical centre, theatre, construction area and salon. It was created by three local mums – Sarah Hodges, Lisa Hargreaves and Ali Turrell – who saw a gap in Melksham for alternative facilities for children and parents. Since opening in December, co-director Ali said there has been a real “community feel” about the space, with new children and parents continuing to visit alongside regulars who attend every week. “Everyone has been really positive and really responsive,” said Ali. “There was clearly a need for it, which is lovely.   • Assembly Hall attracts household names to Melksham A new wave of nationally recognised acts are set to appear at Melksham Assembly Hall as the venue expands its entertainment programme while continuing to host community events. The venue has strengthened links with promoters under new manager Robert Reay-Waugh, who took over earlier this year, helping secure a programme of household names alongside community events, weddings, parties and local groups. Among the performers booked are Toyah, former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon, comedian Dom Jolly, vocal quartet G4 and folk favourites The Wurzels.   • Booking system to launch at Melksham recycling centre Visitors to the Household Recycling Centre in Bowerhill will need to book appointments from September as part of a pilot scheme being introduced by Wiltshire Council. The system is being piloted at six HRCs in Wiltshire to help reduce queuing, improve the customer experience and minimise disruption for nearby communities and businesses. Residents will be able to make bookings from 8th September with visits by appointment only beginning on 14th September. Residents will initially be able to book a 30-minute slot up to one week in advance, with some same-day appointments available. Wiltshire Council says the length of slots will be regularly reviewed to ensure there is maximum capacity available at sites. A spokesperson for Wiltshire Council said, “The new system is designed to make visits more convenient by helping to manage demand and reduce waiting times, particularly during busy periods.   • Fundraising rugby quiz night for women’s team A rugby-themed quiz night is being held at Melksham Rugby Club on Friday 14th August. Hosted by Melksham’s women’s rugby team, the quiz starts at 7.30pm. Teams of two to four people can enter for £20. Organisers say, “Think you know rugby? Or are you just really good at pretending you do after two pints? Perfect. Bring your ‘experts’, your guessers and your mate who once watched a Six Nations game and now thinks they’re a rugby genius. Scan the QR code, grab your squad, and come help us ‘Fill the Coach.’” The event is part of a fundraising campaign to support the women’s team ahead of next season.   • Wiltshire declared in drought as dry weather continues Wiltshire has been declared as being in drought after weeks of hot, dry weather have left rivers, reservoirs and groundwater levels under pressure. The county is among the areas covered by the Environment Agency’s Wessex drought area, which also includes Dorset, Somerset and south Gloucestershire.
