Town come away with point from long trip to Plymouth

Sat 12th Feb. Southern League Div. One. Att: 185 Plymouth Parkway 1 Melksham Town 1

ONE of the longest away days of the season awaited Rich Fey’s men on Saturday 12th February, and they were welcomed to the South Coast by abysmal weather conditions, which had turned the pitch into a mud bath.

Regardless of this, we were still able to witness 90 minutes of Southern League action, with the two sides sat side-by-side in the table and both looking to make a push for the play off places. Town were off the back of two wins on the bounce, and their hosts Plymouth Parkway were looking for a win themselves, after beating Highworth last week.

There was also added incentive for the hosts; in the reverse fixture Town miraculously overturned a 3-0 deficit in the second half to win 4-3, leaving Parkway a very frustrated picture. However, Town would be without forward Kyle Tooze who is serving a suspension following his red card last week.

The pitch was in poor condition as the game kicked off, and with the rain battering down it was only going to get worse. However, Town didn’t let that interrupt their plans, as within the first five minutes, Jay Malshanskyj latched onto Luke Ballinger’s perfectly weighted through pass, and finished superbly to give his side a very early lead. Three goals in his last three games for Jay Malshanskyj who is rewarding his manager’s faith in him, taking his opportunity with a run of games back in the starting XI.

A brilliant start was nearly made better, when goalscorer Jay Malshasnkyj’s front post flick on header found the head of David Thompson, who met it well, but it was well held by the ‘keeper.

Town faced an immediate response from the play-off chasing hosts, and after some tidy build up play, a deep cross to the back post was met by Jack Crago to give the hosts an equaliser just 15 minutes into the game.

Matt Hall pulled off a superb save not long after conceding, flying away to his left to deny Parkway an important second in quick succession.

Both sides refused to let the conditions get the better of them and were both looking to get on the front foot, with Jay Malshanskyj causing issues in behind the Parkway defence. Town were able to get into a few good areas before a last ditch clearance or tackle denied them. However, the sides went in level, thanks to some superb goalkeeping from both ‘keepers and the pitch making it difficult to be clinical.

Having ended the half the stronger side, Town came back out continuing to apply pressure on a stern Parkway defence, and almost straight after the restart Luke Ballinger tried a bit of magic with a lob to catch the ‘keeper out, but his effort fell wide.  A few minutes later, the hosts broke away and were inches away from taking the lead, but the Town defence did enough to put the striker off. This foreshadowed an end-to-end second half, as both sides looked to grab three points.

Matt Hall also continued his fine form into the second half; as well as his usual diving efforts, a few times he was needed to get off his line quickly and bravely to smother the ball at the feet of an on-rushing striker. Matt was one of many who could have been named man of the match on Saturday afternoon, such was the work rate and desire of the squad.

At times, the lads up front were treading water, but they showed superb fitness levels to chase absolutely everything up until the full time whistle, which sounded after what had been an entertaining 1-1 draw considering the conditions.

Both managers would have been eyeing up the three points, but happy to have claimed a point in a game which could have gone either way.

Up next for Town is a welcome return to Oakfields on Saturday 19th February, as Mangotsfield make the journey to Wiltshire, with Rich Fey’s side looking to continue a recent uplift in form.

  • Concerns raised over new specialist school in Melksham

A parent has criticised Melksham House School for what they say is a lack of support for their nine-year-old son, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The child joined the specialist school, based in the Grade II listed Melksham House, when it opened in September last year. The parent said they were told by staff that the school “cannot cope” with his needs.

The parent said, “Our son started at Melksham House when it opened last September. It was such a relief for us, we made it into a happy thing, we spun it positively to him, we paid for the school uniform.

“My son has ADHD; it shocked me to think that they couldn’t cater for someone like my child, who in my opinion, is a normal child,” they said. “Melksham needs a school like that, but they don’t seem to want to cater for the children in there.”

Stall bookings for the town’s popular Food and River Festival opened recently ahead of the event in September.

The annual festival, which takes place at King George V Park, is a celebration of local produce and river-based activities. Last year marked the event’s 10th anniversary, with more than 4,000 people attending.

The festival will run on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September and promises a weekend of community fun, entertainment and some of the best food and drink from the local area.

Stall bookings opened at the start of January. Organisers say, “We are full for coffee sellers but still have a few spaces for hot food stalls and stalls selling crafts, chutneys and jams.”

  • MP secures Prime Minister’s backing for Melksham Hospital talks

Local MP Brian Mathew has stepped up a campaign to expand services at Melksham Hospital after raising the issue directly with the Prime Minister in Parliament.

Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday 21st January, the MP pressed the Prime Minister on the urgent need to improve access to local healthcare in the Melksham and Devizes constituency.

He highlighted the absence of a Minor Injuries Unit and the growing pressure placed on patients forced to travel to Bath or Swindon for urgent care.

In response, the Prime Minister thanked Dr Mathew for raising the issue and confirmed that he would ensure a meeting takes place with the relevant health minister to discuss concerns and work through how they can be addressed.

Brian Mathew MP said, “Improving services at Melksham Hospital has been a priority for me since the day I was elected because I hear week in, week out from residents who are struggling to access the care they need closer to home. People are being sent miles away for routine appointments, often with poor public transport and long waits adding unnecessary stress. "

  • Free valuation day with antiques star Paul Martin

Famed antiques expert Paul Martin is returning to Melksham this week for a free valuation day.

A familiar face on shows such as Antiques Road Trip and FlogIt!, Paul is running another free valuation day at ‘that meeting space’ in the Market Place following the success of previous events in the town.

The event, on Wednesday 4th February from 10am to 2pm, will see Paul set up ready to value local people’s most cherished items.

Organisers say, “At previous events we have had Lowry prints evaluated and old toys that were valued at £150. Come and find out what your stuff is worth for free.”

Paul said jewellery and watches remain the most common items brought in for valuation. “That’s the classic. They’re portable, small and of high value,” Paul explained. “If it’s jewellery like brooches that aren’t fashionable, pearls that aren’t fashionable, or rings that don’t fit—why have them hidden in a drawer?

“Why not sell them, get some money, and plant a tree, embrace nature, go on holiday—do something for yourself and your family.”

  • Parking scheme could be implemented on Union Street

A residents’ parking scheme could be implemented on Union Street, following the closure of Lowbourne Car Park.

Resident-only permit bays could be introduced along Union Street, following the closure of the Lowbourne Car Park, which is expected to be removed once the planned older people’s flats are constructed on the former library site.

The idea was put forward by Cllr Jennie Westbrook at Melksham Town Council’s Economic Development and Planning Committee meeting on 13th January.

Councillors unanimously supported the proposal and agreed to refer the possible introduction of on-street parking permits to the Local Highway and Footway Improvement Group (LHFIG).

The pub remains open for business, but an official re-opening celebration is planned for Saturday 7th February with free food tasting from 5pm to 10pm and with existing and new customers all welcome.

Marin has an impressive background in hospitality, having previously run The Alma in Stoke Newington, Islington – a pub that scooped Time Out’s prestigious “Most Loved Pub” award in 2016.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Marin came to the UK in 2001 and began working as a kitchen porter in London. Through hard work and passion, he worked his way up to head chef and later took on his local pub when the owners retired, transforming it into a cornerstone of the local community.
