Runners tackle muddy Bowerhill Bomber race

OVER 120 runners took park in last week’s Bowerhill Bomber (winter) race, which raised funds for Melksham Carnival.

The run took place on Sunday 27th February in Bowerhill Sports Field, with runners tackling either a 10k or 5k route.

The amount of money raised for Melksham Carnival is yet to be confirmed, but organisers hope to present the carnival’s committee with a cheque later this month.

Organiser of the fun run, Tracey Hyde from Redfish Events, said, “The Bowerhill Bomber (W) was amazing – lots of mud, runners and dogs, even the sun even came out, I was expecting snow and storm Gladys!

“All participants were fantastic and worked hard through the mud. We had super speedy runners and for the first time in Redfish history we has a lady called Cathrine and her dog come first in the 10K; and Archie aged 13, won the 5K.

“It was great to see many familiar faces and brilliant to see a lot of new faces. We even had someone come all the way from Leicester for the event. Thank you to all the runners, marshals, family and friends on making a fantastic event.”

Town councillor Sue Mortimer also took part in the event, completing the 5k route in less than 44 minutes. She wore blue and yellow laces on her shoes as a show of support to the people of Ukraine, whose country were invaded by Russia last week.

  • Council calls on Government to rethink Melksham bypass decision

By Local Democracy Reporter Peter Davison

Someone is killed or seriously injured on a notorious stretch of the A350 roughly once every 11 weeks, a senior councillor has said, as Wiltshire Council demands the Government rethink its decision to ditch funding for the Melksham bypass. During an emergency debate at full council on Tuesday 20th October, councillors overwhelmingly backed a motion condemning the decision and demanding continued investment in the key north-south route. They also called for the more than £500,000 the council has spent developing the scheme to be refunded.

  • Gompels submits detailed plans for new warehouse

Gompels has taken another step towards building its new warehouse in Melksham after submitting a detailed design of the scheme to Wiltshire Council. The reserved matters application covers the scale, layout, appearance, landscaping and access for the proposed development on land south of the A365 Bath Road and west of Turnpike Garage. It follows outline planning permission being granted earlier this year for the warehouse and office development, which the company says will be a major investment in the town and create hundreds of jobs.

  • New book brings forgotten RAF Melksham history to life

The history of Melksham’s former RAF station is being brought to life in a new book exploring its role in training thousands of service personnel during the Second World War and beyond. Written by retired RAF Wing Commander Rob Cumming, RAF Melksham: Its Beginnings, Life and Re-creation traces the beginnings, working life and eventual re-creation of the station, which opened in 1940 and closed in 1965. Rob began researching the history while working with Melksham Remembers, a local history group. “It became clear that while thousands of airmen and airwomen trained and lived at RAF Melksham from its opening in 1940, its existence is rapidly fading from the community
