Residents in Whitley are making thousands of poppies for a special display to mark this year’s Remembrance commemorations.
The group is aiming to produce 18,000 poppies to form a ‘field of remembrance’ at Pocock’s Paddock on the corner of Middle Lane and Corsham Road.
The display will include soldier silhouettes and a walkway through the field, with a bench for visitors to sit and reflect on loved ones.
The project is being organised by local resident Barry Pocock, who is hoping for it to become an annual event bringing the community together.
He said, “We want to show what can be achieved when we work together. It is a chance for people of all ages to share stories.”
Poppy-making sessions are being held throughout the year at the Reading Rooms, with the first attracting 25 residents.
Barry said, “It was fantastic. I was a bit overwhelmed by the response. No two poppies are the same because they have been made by different people.”
Among the display will be silhouettes of soldiers, including female figures.

He said, “You always see the men with a rifle with their heads bowed, but there is also one of a woman saluting. Women were a major part of the backbone of the war and we want to include that.”
Barry, whose grandad was in charge of the Home Guard in Whitley during the Second World War, said he was inspired to launch the project after seeing the impact of similar displays.
He said, “Displays like this bring it home how important it is for people to remember the service and sacrifice that was given.”
The next Poppy Party will be held on 20th May at the Reading Rooms in Whitley from 2pm to 4pm. Finished poppies can also be dropped off at Whitley Stores.
Community Action Whitley and Shaw will support the event by helping with access to the paddock for visitors.
