Melksham Information Centre, situated in Church Street opposite the Post Office, this week received the pre-Christmas paper-work from Cards for Good Causes, meaning that the season of goodwill will soon be upon us, together with dark nights and cold weather!
However, the staff at the information centre say they will be on hand “with bright lights and big smiles to provide you with a range of high quality service and goods for as long as it takes which will include Christmas cards and, of course, stamps! We sell these too, there’s no need to queue!
“The centre boasts an eclectic selection of souvenirs for customers such as key rings, fridge magnets and tea towels (lightweight and easy to pack) together with our new line in locally crafted bone china mugs, all displaying pictures of the town. And of course the very popular locally-produced honey and the recently added beeswax and bee polish.
“Need to travel? Book a National Express coach ticket with us. Need a last minute gift? Theatre tokens are always appreciated. Visiting Bath, the RUH, Chippenham, Devizes or further afield? Current bus timetables are available, as well as a goodly array of train travel information from Melksham to Swindon, Westbury, etc.
“Local events are well-advertised and in some cases, tickets for these are on sale through the centre, such as films and concerts at the Assembly Hall, the local amateur drama group and the choral society.
“New residents in the area might care to take advantage of shopping trips to local towns, one week to Chippenham, the next to Devizes and then Trowbridge. Picking you up at home, these are free, while the monthly days out to various parts of the South and West for about £20 are very popular, all bookable at the centre.
“We offer a wide range of cards, from the postal variety to hand-painted cards suitable for all occasions, and some beautiful water-colour pictures. Several of our shelves are devoted to a selection of second-hand books, and we can also provide Ordnance Survey maps as well as road and local street maps. And of course, there is the usual display of holiday brochures from all around the country.
“Our well-informed staff – all volunteers – are kept up to scratch by our team leader, Andrea Smart, and should any reader be interested in coming to work at the centre for half-a-day per week, please telephone her on 01225 707424 and she will be delighted to hear from you.
“Our motto is: If we don’t know the answer, we’ll find someone who does! No such words as, ‘Sorry, can’t help you’ at Melksham Information Centre! So come in and see us between 9.30am and 4.30pm. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, while on Wednesday the centre is open until 1.00pm. Saturday hours are from 10.00am, again until 1.00pm – and we look forward to seeing you.”
