A BY-election will be held to appoint a second councillor to join the town council and represent Melksham East Ward, following the resignation of former councillor, Carl Houghton, in July this year.
Carl Houghton was elected to represent the Melksham East ward in 2021 as an independent candidate, part of the Together for Melksham group. He was the second councillor to resign this year, leaving due to personal circumstances.
In April, former town councillor, Louisa Lewis, who also represented the Melksham East Ward, resigned. She cited bullying as the reason for leaving. A by-election was called, which was won by Jennie Westbrook in July.
Over 10 members of the public need to make a request for a by-election to be called. If less than 10 people submit a written request, then the town council is required to co-opt new members.
The latest by-election will take place on Thursday 5th October.
Melksham mayor, cllr Simon Crundell said, “Democracy is a real privilege and as your mayor, I urge you to participate in this upcoming town council by-election. Your vote will make a big difference. When you cast your ballot, you are not merely marking an ‘X’ on a piece of paper; you are influencing the direction of our town’s future.”
