A VIP club for visually impaired people and their friends and family meets every Thursday morning in Melksham for those who want to share experiences and advice.

Caroline Fielding, of the VIP Club said, “Living with sight loss can be isolating and lonely. This is a group where VIPs and their friends and family can meet for coffee and other activities, away from the usual community centre-type places.

“For more details and to find out where the club is meeting, contact me on CarolineDfielding@hotmail. com. You can also visit our facebook page – Virtually VIPs Voice for more information. Our sight may be limited, but our vision is unlimited”

  • Calls for urgent safety measures after children rescued from river

Urgent safety measures should be put in place near the River Avon following three recent near misses involving children playing in the river in Melksham, says the Adventure Centre.

The centre, based adjacent to the river in the King George V Park, wants safety signs and buoys installed to alert people to the risks and provide assistance if anyone gets into danger, following recent incidents where members had to help rescue children from the river.

They are also calling for a gate to be fitted in front of a slipway that leads to a 12ft drop and runs close to the slide near the children’s play park.

“We are seeing lots of children playing in and around the river,” said Kevin Bowerbank, Chairman of the Adventure Centre, which hosts the Wiltshire Youth Canoe Club among other activities.

“There is a very fine line; you’re talking seconds between struggling to swim and drowning."

  • Melksham man prepares to cycle to Weymouth for children’s charity

A Melksham man, who didn’t own a bike until June, is preparing to embark on a 73-mile cycle from Melksham to Weymouth in aid of a charity which supports children with additional needs.

Ian Hedges will take on the challenge on 27th September to raise funds for Stepping Stones in Trowbridge, which supports babies and children aged up to four years old from across the local area through therapy and developmental support.

Ian will embark on the ride ahead of a longer 250-mile ride from Melksham to Land’s End next year.

“I did not own a bike before 4th June,” said Ian. “A friend of mine said you should do a charity cycle ride, so I bought a bike and have been relentlessly training ever since.”

Ian has so far raised over £1,000 for Stepping Stones, which has supported his children. “I myself am autistic, and when I was born in 1983, places like Stepping Stones just didn’t exist. We have come a long way ultimately, but I don’t want to live in a society where people get left behind.”

  • Victory for Neighbourhood Plan as plans for 300 homes refused

Melksham’s newly adopted Neighbourhood Plan has scored an early victory after plans for 300 homes at Snarlton Farm in Melksham East were refused - just one day after the plan was formally adopted. The housing site was not one of those allocated for development in the Joint Melksham Neighbourhood Plan, which was recently adopted following a community referendum on 31st July where 89% voted in favour. The plan is intended to guide local development and protect the area from speculative housing proposals.

  • Raising a glass to Melksham’s community champions

Local couple Jeanette and Mike Nash were recently presented with a bottle of champagne by Melksham-based travel company Holidays and Cruises to celebrate receiving the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King’s Birthday Honours list.

The presentation took place during a trip to Poole with The Singin’ Group, which the couple lead each week at the Riverside Centre in Melksham.

Steve Plummer of Holidays and Cruises, said, “We were thrilled to mark Jeanette and Mike’s well-deserved honour with a small celebration and raise a glass to their fantastic contribution to the local community.”

  • Primary school praised for helping pupils ‘flourish’

A local primary school is celebrating after receiving high praise in its recent Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) inspection.

The inspector highlighted the many strengths of the school and affirmed that St Mary’s Broughton Gifford Primary School is ‘living up to its foundation as a church school and is enabling pupils and adults to flourish.’

Headteacher Tiff Butcher said, “This is a reflection of the dedication, love and care that characterise the school community.

“We are thrilled with the outcome of our SIAMS inspection. It’s a wonderful recognition of the hard work and compassion of our school community. Our school vision shines through in the children’s learning, relationships and personal growth — a true reflection of the light within each of them.”

  • Teaching excellence awards for Melksham duo

Two Melksham residents who teach at Wiltshire College and University Centre have been recognised for their outstanding contribution at the college’s annual staff awards.

Keileigh Thomas has been a lecturer in beauty for over nine years, and Kat Vulakovaki has taught English for nearly three years. Both received Outstanding Teaching awards after being selected by a judging panel.

“I am honoured to have been awarded for Outstanding Teaching – it’s always a pleasure to be recognised,” said Keileigh, who was awarded for her dedication to teaching, with her student groups ending the academic year with exceptional exam results.

Kat Vulakovaki said it was a privilege to receive her award and be recognised for ‘empathy, dedication and inclusive teaching.’ She said, “The cheering of my wider colleagues on the day will resonate with me forever.”

  • New café brings fresh offering to village community centre

A new café has opened at Seend Community Centre, providing a social space for residents, visitors and community groups to enjoy a range of refreshments.

Rusty’s Café Lounge Bar is the latest addition to the centre’s facilities, offering indoor and outdoor seating, a garden and bar service.

“The cafe developed from a desire to improve and extend what we could offer to our members, the village in general, those attending the many classes, sports and other activities at the Centre and the wider community,” said Tom, the Centre Manager.

“Community social clubs may well have declined in recent years, but not in Seend. Seend Centre is leading the way and staying relevant to the community with the launch of the café."

  • Revised plans for 88 Holt homes approved

Plans for 88 houses in Holt have been approved, following revisions to the original design after strong local objections.

Outline permission for the Great Parks site had already been secured, but the original design and layout for 90 homes was refused by the Wiltshire Council’s Western Area Planning Committee in February.

A revised application was submitted by Bewley Homes following collaboration with Holt Parish Council and Wiltshire Council planning and design officers, and full permission was granted at the committee’s meeting earlier this month.

The scheme includes public open space, a children’s play area, a community orchard and developer contributions to support local facilities.

  • White Horse Military Show set to be the biggest yet

One of the South West’s most exciting and immersive historical events is returning this August – and it’s set to be bigger and better than ever.

The White Horse Military Show will take place from 15th to 17th August, just outside South Wraxall, between Corsham and Bradford on Avon. Now in its fourth year, the show has rapidly grown into a major attraction, fast becoming the premier Living History festival in the South West.

“This year we have over 800 re-enactors and historians taking part in the show,” said organiser Richard Dalton. “Spread over 50 acres of land with over 33 set builds, three music venues and two arenas with demonstrations and battles, vehicles and aircraft, it is a huge task to put on."
