Air cadet squadron aims for greater heights after £3,600 grant

MELKSHAM’S air cadets are being helped to bounce back from the effects of the pandemic by a £3,600 Community Grant.

The money, from Wiltshire Community Foundation, will help 2385 Melksham Squadron to continue retaining recruits from low-income families in the area.

Group leader Flt Lt Greg McKay said ensuring new recruits feel part of the squadron is vital.

“This grant is very welcome and will make a huge difference to the young people,” he said. “Our last grant from Wiltshire Community Foundation in 2019 bought T-shirts and polo shirts branded with our crest and they were really appreciated by the cadets. Now we can buy more thanks to this money.”

He said the Ministry of Defence pays for the cadets’ blue RAF uniforms for ceremonial occasions and the squadron has to fund the combat uniform, known as greens, through fundraising.

“We are not allowed to indent a cadet for any new uniform until they have attended for four or five months so we would lose some cadets because they don’t feel a part of it,” said Flt Lt McKay.

“The polo shirt or T-shirt means they have something to make them feel like they belong and that makes a big difference.”

The squadron, which meets weekly at its HQ in Lancaster Road, Bowerhill, organises regular activities, which include adventure training, sport, music, shooting, flying and gliding. Cadets also get an insight into life in the RAF, with marching drills, map-reading and technical training on the principles of flying and aircraft maintenance.

Flt Lt McKay, who joined the squadron five years ago, said being part of the squadron gives young people experiences they would never otherwise have, like going gliding and trekking.

He said, “It’s also somewhere they can go that teaches them discipline and the importance of being part of a group, as well as giving them some positive role models.”

When the squadron was unable to meet during lockdown Flt Lt McKay organised online meetings with speakers and quizzes.

“They were initially for the Melksham squadron but we found out that many of the other squadrons weren’t meeting so we expanded it to Chippenham, Corsham, Warminster, Bradford on Avon, Malmesbury, Trowbridge and Westbury,” he said.  “We were getting between 50 and 80 cadets at each virtual parade.

“Every structure which young people were used to, school, home, meeting friends or whatever, was just blown away so anything they knew was gone and I worried about them.”

Despite losing some cadets during lockdown, numbers are still healthy, with an intake of 22 recruits in September and another one due in March.

“You always lose cadets because they get older and develop other interests. Some of them move away for work or university,” said Fl Lt McKay. “But there are always young people out there and it was important to me that we kept all our volunteers and I was pleased that we managed to do that.”

He has a team of 19 volunteers and four uniformed staff, who are also there voluntarily. “We have some with specialist knowledge and enough that not everyone has to commit to every week so that’s ideal,” he said.

He added the grant gives the squadron the chance to get on and plan activities without having to worry about fundraising for uniforms. “Part of the money will also buy jackets for the volunteers,” he said. “We couldn’t have done any of this without the help of the community foundation, it’s a massive help.”

Wiltshire Community Foundation joint chief executive Fiona Oliver added, “In rural areas where there are so few things to do for young people, the air cadets provide excitement and a sense of camaraderie that will stand many of them in good stead for the rest of their lives.

“We are delighted that, thanks to the generosity of our donors who care about their communities, the funding is helping the squadron’s fantastic staff and volunteers continue to have such a positive effect.”

  • Cup success for young Lionesses in their first season

Melksham Town’s U9 Lionesses have marked their first season together by reaching a cup final.

The young side lost to a strong Chippenham side in the North Wilts Youth final, played in Marlborough last month.

“The girls had a fantastic morning, walking onto the pitch to cheers from the crowd, taking part in the handshake line, seeing their names and photos in the matchday programme, and enjoying the presentation at the end,” said coach Karen Broadhead.

“While the result was disappointing, the scoreline didn’t reflect the fight, determination and heart they showed from start to finish and every single one of them is a winner in my eyes."

  • Villagers to create ‘field of remembrance’ display

Residents in Whitley are making thousands of poppies for a special display to mark this year’s Remembrance commemorations.

The group is aiming to produce 18,000 poppies to form a ‘field of remembrance’ at Pocock’s Paddock on the corner of Middle Lane and Corsham Road.

The display will include soldier silhouettes and a walkway through the field, with a bench for visitors to sit and reflect on loved ones.

The project is being organised by local resident Barry Pocock, who is hoping for it to become an annual event bringing the community together.

He said, “We want to show what can be achieved when we work together. It is a chance for people of all ages to share stories.”

The timetable can be collected from the Tourist Information Centre, the library and the offices of Melksham Without and Melksham Town Council during their normal opening hours.

  • Local man offers free bee collection

A local bee enthusiast is offering to collect swarms of honeybees and bumblebees free of charge across Melksham and the surrounding area.

Pete Colegate has been collecting bee swarms for around 20 years and says he is available to ‘come to the rescue’ of anyone who needs a helping hand.

He said, “Due to the very wet winter many colonies of bees have been lost, and as we rely on them as pollinators, we must ensure of their survival.”

Pete said that once collected, the bees are taken to one of several hives. He said, “We then give them to a beginner who is starting to keep bees. The bees will reproduce and then start again. We never kill anything. We do sell the honey among neighbours if we have any surplus.”

  • Play areas selected for £153,000 improvements

Play areas in Melksham have been selected for an upgrade following a review by councillors at Melksham Town Council.

At an extraordinary Full Council meeting on 27th April, councillors unanimously approved plans to combine £53,000 left over from last year’s budget with £100,000 already set aside for 2026/27, creating a total fund of £153,000 for upgrades.

Building on recent play area tours and a report presented to members, councillors reviewed priorities across multiple sites and considered factors such as condition, ownership, delivery options, accessibility and potential grant funding.

Councillors agreed that play areas at Dunch Lane and Riverside would be the highest priority, with the council now set to move forward with putting the work out to tender.

Two other play parks will also see repairs, including fencing at Speedwell Close and targeted improvements at the Hazelwood play area.

Victoria, a professionally trained singer, began performing at the age of 15 after discovering her passion for music at the Wyvern Theatre in Devizes. She went on to tour in an award-winning production of The Boyfriend before performing across Europe as a leading lady in two original rock operas.

  • Children get active with school’s mini marathon

Pupils at a Melksham primary school took part in a mini marathon recently by running laps of the school’s astroturf.

Forest and Sandridge CE Primary School recently hosted the challenge, endorsed by Joe Wicks, also known as The Body Coach.

The initiative saw children complete a distance in a way that suited them, whether by running, jogging, or walking. The focus was on participation, personal achievement and wellbeing rather than competition.

The children took part on the school’s new astroturf, with some running 18 laps, roughly three miles.

Teacher Sophie Overton said, “We believe that this was an enjoyable experience for all involved and we are proud to be part of a nationwide effort to inspire children to stay active.”

  • Questions raised over future of Bowerhill open space

Residents have raised concerns about a parcel of land for sale in a residential area in Bowerhill.

The green space, measuring 520 square metres, is located at Bader Park. It was advertised for sale by Auction House with a guide price of £3,500 but failed to sell at the auction on 27th April.

Residents have raised concerns about potential development of the land if it is sold, including the loss of four informal parking spaces, a well-used footpath and green space.

In March, 19 residents contacted Melksham Without Parish Council (MWPC) to ask whether the council would consider purchasing the space as an Asset of Community Value. At the parish council’s Full Council meeting on 20th April, 15 residents attended to ask questions and take part in the discussion.

One resident asked whether the land could be saved as a ‘village green’. Wiltshire councillor Nick Holder, who has been supporting residents on the matter, said it could instead be designated as a ‘Local Green Space’ in the next version of the Melksham Neighbourhood Plan, which would require input from local residents.
