Pupils of Aloeric Primary School are getting involved in Fairtrade Fortnight to help highlight the severe lack of food security faced by farmers around the world.
This Fairtrade Fortnight, Aloeric Primary School will join forces with the rest of the country by holding a Fairtrade lunch on Thursday 10th March and Fairtrade breakfast on Friday 11th March, to support the campaign.
The school is supporting Fairtrade by including Fairtrade products in both meals and raising awareness of where our food originates and how our support is vital to help sustain the farmer’s economic well-being, celebrating Fairtrade and taking action for the poorest farming communities around the world.
Mrs. Hodges, a teacher from the school said, “Lack of food security is one of the world’s most critical issues. It is in our interest that we in the UK help drive a real change for the farming communities who need it most.
“Fairtrade means many producers and workers are able to do what we take for granted – put enough food on the table for themselves and the people they care about, all year round.
“Aloeric School has recently become a Fairtrade Aware School and we are actively campaigning for Fairtrade and have learnt what difference it makes for the world’s most vulnerable communities by making farming viable and generating vital economic benefits.
“We hope that as many people in Melksham as possible will get involved this Fairtrade Fortnight. Making small changes to personal shopping habits will make a real difference for real people.”
Adam Gardner, communities campaigns manager for the Fairtrade Foundation said, “Farming is the backbone of the world. It’s simply wrong that whilst farmers work hard to produce what we eat so many of them should go hungry themselves.
“It is the support of campaigners such as Aloeric School, that drives the Fairtrade movement forward and we hope the residents in Melksham will join them this year.”
Fairtrade Fortnight is an annual campaign aiming to get shoppers, campaigners and businesses in the UK talking, thinking about and buying Fairtrade. From 29th February – 13th March, thousands of events will be held to amplify the campaign in many of Fairtrade’s network of over 600 Fairtrade Towns, 1350 Fairtrade Schools and 170 Fairtrade Universities, and 7,500 Fairtrade Places of Worship.
