An army cadet has been selected to take on the role of Mayor’s Cadet, accompanying the mayor at civic events over the coming year.
Cadet Lance Corporal Butland of Melksham Detachment, Wiltshire Army Cadet Force, was presented with the Mayor’s Cadet patch and certificate by Mayor Saffi Rabey on 9th June.
Cadet Lance Corporal Butland, 14, was selected in recognition of her extensive involvement in local events and her willingness to support others both within the cadets and the wider community.
The presentation took place following a parade from the Cadet Hut on Ruskin Avenue to The Manor School, where fellow cadets and the mayor gathered to celebrate her appointment as Mayor’s Cadet.
Mayor Saffi Rabey said, “I’m really pleased to welcome Lance Corporal Butland as my Mayor’s Cadet.
“From reading her application, it’s clear just how proud she is of Melksham and how much she already gives back to our community. Whether it’s supporting the carnival, Remembrance and the Poppy Appeal, or getting involved in events like the Great British Spring Clean, she leads by example and shows real commitment to our town.
“I was particularly impressed by the way she supports younger cadets, encouraging them to get involved and helping them understand the value of community spirit. Alongside this, her achievement in completing the Ten Tors challenge speaks volumes about her determination and resilience.
“With such strong recommendations from her detachment and her positive attitude and enthusiasm, I know she will be a fantastic Mayor’s Cadet and a brilliant ambassador for Melksham. I’m really looking forward to working with her over the coming year.”
