A former Melksham soldier who built a successful property portfolio from scratch has published a step‑by‑step guide for new investors.
Neil Stewart’s new title, The Book on UK Property: 7 Ways to Become a Successful Property Investor, sets out seven strategies for building a profitable portfolio, promising “honest advice” on navigating today’s challenging UK housing market.
“I’ve written the book at a time of big changes in legislation and shifting markets,” said Neil, a former British Army engineer. “It offers clear steps for anyone ready to start investing in UK property. New investors will find honest advice on buying, managing and growing a portfolio.
“The guide cuts through jargon and shows new investors what really works in 2026’s uncertain-interest, high-demand landscape.”
Neil draws on more than 22 years of investing experience and says the book is designed for readers “craving freedom and choice” through property income and maybe just those curious about how it could work for them.
It includes advice on how to secure finance, spot undervalued properties, manage tenants and make use of available tax benefits. He includes real‑life case studies of deals which, he says, allowed him to match his previous salary from rental income within 18 months.
“My goal was to write the book I wish I had when I started,” Neil said. “I cover the wins and setbacks, so readers can act with clarity and avoid costly mistakes.”
Neil spent 14 years in the British Army as an electronics and telecommunications engineer before moving into consultancy work with police forces, schools and private firms. After leaving the forces he turned to property, buying his first buy‑to‑let in 2004 and going on to study “every corner of the market”, from houses in multiple occupation to commercial projects.
Within a year and a half, he says, income from his rental properties had replaced his army and consultancy earnings, prompting him to begin mentoring new investors and running seminar‑style coaching sessions. The new book, he says, brings together his most effective strategies and “hard‑won” lessons.
He plans to run in‑depth seminars in 2026 to provide hands‑on coaching for readers who want further support in applying the book’s methods.
