Atworth WI who had their April meeting on Monday 16th, report, “For a change we started a little earlier and coffee and tea was available on arrival so that people could chat and catch up before the business part of the meeting. This seemed to work well.
“Our new programme of speakers’ workshops and outings was distributed . A lot of work goes into preparing a programme that hopefully interests all members. Pam Loosmore was thanked for doing this and Lesley Adam for doing the printing.
“We have continued with our visits to Wiltshire Music Centre to see live screening of ballets and operas. Those members who attended the talks by Marcel Floyd on clematis and Pippa Greenwood on her very varied career as a gardener had had a very enjoyable day, finishing with a cream tea. Five members enjoyed a talk on Mendelssohn by Barry Collett with excerpts of his music on CDs at Marsh Hall, Rowde.
“After the business meeting we were entertained by a music group called Slow Jam . One of our members, Leila Riley, is one of a group of nine musicians in the group and she introduced the various items of Appalachian Mountain and Blue Grass music. It was great fun. They introduced us to some unusual instruments as well as the fiddle and the banjo.
“The competition was for the best homemade percussion instrument and there were several entries. The percussion players in the band were the judges and the winner was Helen Snowball. We were encouraged to join in with instruments and sing the choruses. There was some rousing singing, rhythmic playing and a good deal of laughter. Everyone had a good time.”
