At the February meeting of Atworth WI we had a good turnout after numbers at the previous meeting had been affected by the virus that was going around. We were pleased to welcome a new member.
Since the last meeting we enjoyed a skittles evening at The White Hart at the end of January, with Maureen Webb and Sheila Brown having the highest scores. We held a coffee morning at a member’s house on February 13th, giving the proceeds to the Denman Appeal. Several members went to a live screening from the Royal Opera House of Mozart’s opera, Rigoletta, at the Wiltshire Music Centre and another group is going to see the Royal Ballet’s production of The Winter’s Tale, also on screen, at the end of the month.
We discussed plans for a summer outing which will take place in June. The winner of the competition for a small foliage corsage was Lesley Adam.
As the next meeting will be our AGM, and members were asked to consider whether they would like to be on the committee.
Our speaker, Tony Cooper, came at very short notice to tell us about automata and other items of kinetic art. He told us how he became interested and collected all sorts of bits and pieces that might be useful for his creations. He showed us slides of various creations of kinetic art and atomata, one of which was the chiming clock at Wells Cathedral. We were fascinated and fortunate to see closely several examples of Tony’s work, some of which can take up to a year to complete. There was a story behind each one and some had been made for other people. He was ably assisted by his wife, who demonstrated the movement and sound of each one.
Our next meeting is on March 19th at Atworth Village Hall at 7.30pm
