Avon Bowls held its annual Celebrity Bowls Match at the club, based in the grounds of Melksham House on Sunday 22nd May.
Pauline Baker said, “Among distinguished guests at the event was MP Michelle Donelan, making her first visit to the club, together with Mayor Terri Welch, a regular supporter, and two representatives from the Melksham Shed, Peter Woodgate and Eddie Gibbs who presented Mayor Welch with the splendid garden bench made for her by their members.
“The mayor had invited the bowls club to be the custodian of the bench on her behalf, an honour the club was delighted to accept. Michelle Donelan who was attending her second event of the day before dashing off to foreign parts on parliamentary business, threw caution to the winds and ‘had a go’, admitting she had enjoyed the experience of green bowling for the first time.
“The club was also pleased to welcome a gathering of local councillors from both town and parish councils and the weather was kind, very helpful on these occasions.
“And of course, mention must be made of Tony and Jean Brown, who although they do not play bowls have attended matches in all weathers for many years, for which support the club is grateful.
“Many club members attended, mingling with the guests, happily giving tuition to total beginners, buying raffle tickets and enjoying delicious refreshments. All in all, another successful occasion for Avon Bowls Club.
“I remind members of the public that every Tuesday evening from 6pm there is a ‘roll-up’ open to everyone. Bring a pair of flat-soled shoes and the club will provide the rest. Come along and ‘have a go’ just as Michelle Donelan did on Sunday. You never know, you might find you enjoy it and you will receive a warm welcome from our members.”
