Good results in a number of national and county competitions have been notched up by Avon Bowls Club players.
The club secretary reports, “Some have already represented Wiltshire in the National Championships at Leamington Spa, the Mecca of outdoor bowls. We have more to follow them in the next few days. Results to date are as follows: In the Johns Competition, Marcia Hartley and Georgina Newman were members of the Wiltshire 4s team, winning against Essex in the semi-final, but losing to Surrey in the final.
“Tom Newman played at Devizes BC and was beaten 21/18 by Nathan Richards (Westlecot BC) in the Under 25s Singles. He will go to Leamington to play as runner-up. Tom Newman and Tom Little played at Devizes BC and were beaten 28/11 by Jake Webster and Mikey Titcombe (Westlecot BC) in the Under 25s Pairs.
“More competitions are still being fought, progress as follows: We have three groups entered in the West Wilts Holloway Mixed Pairs. John Crowder and Dawn Edwards lost 18/15 to Val and Kevin Ringham (Chippenham Town BC), Sue Renshaw and Mike Maslin lost to Sandra Bartlett and Alfy Maslin (Winsley BC), Emma Maslin and Peter Renshaw lost to fellow club members Joe Newman and Marcia Hartley 22/11. In the Men’s Over 60s Triples, Peter Renshaw, Malcolm Hole and Richard Buckland beat Salisbury BC 22/12 and go through to play Purton BC in the semi-final at Chippenham Town on 31stAugust.
“All club competitions are well under way now. Under a new entry scheme introduced this year, all club members were given the opportunity to take part in them. As a result, many more of them have played. There is far more evidence of people getting on the green to practise and improve their game and to get the various matches played. This new scheme has certainly boosted activities on the green and made the chance to win the club trophies so much more of a challenge and I’m sure, will produce some surprising results!
“Avon Bowls Club offers excellent opportunities for everyone to enjoy the sport, it caters for ladies and men, young and old and is ready to welcome new members throughout the season. Fully qualified club coaches are ready to offer training and advice to all of us, including existing members but especially for newcomers, to ensure that they get the best possible introduction to the game.
“The bowls club is situated in the grounds of Melksham House. Access to the grounds is just off the town Market Place.”
