A single bell at St Michael’s church was tolled 100 times at noon on Sunday 31st January in remembrance of those 100,000 people in the UK who have lost their lives due to the Covid pandemic.
The bell was tolled by Bob and Christine Purnell from Melksham who are this month celebrating 56 years of bellringing at St Michael’s and many other towers.
Ahead of the tribute, Revd Alison Sowton said, “As our nation mourns, our town marks the loss of over 100,000 lives to the pandemic. At noon on Sunday 31st, a Bell Ringer of St Michael’s Church will be tolling the bell 100 times.
“Each one, a remembrance of a thousand lives lost to this disease.
“Each toll a reminder too, that as we lift our prayers to God, His love and compassion is ours.”
