LOCAL woman, Beth Hughes-Smith, walked half a million steps in March to raise money for cancer charity, CLIC Sargent.
About why she took part in CLIC Sargent’s 500,000 steps in March challenge, Beth, who is also pub manager of The Bear, said, “In 2012 my then girlfriend (now wife) Sam was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
“CLIC Sargent stepped in and really supported Sam and her family when it was needed most. Her social worker Jane, even helped us to find our first home once Sam was out of treatment and in remission – amazing right?
“During the Covid-19 pandemic CLIC Sargent have seen a shortfall in funding of over £9million. They haven’t been supported by the government and don’t get NHS funding but the care they provide to young lives vs cancer is absolutely vital.”
Speaking to Melksham News 10 days before the end of the challenge, Beth had already clocked up nearly 400,000 steps.
Beth said, “It’s going really well! I aim to walk 20,000 steps a day during the week, with more relaxed walks at the weekend.”
Beth has already exceeded her original fundraising target of £300, so far raising £410 – but she has hopes that this will continue to rise as the donations continue to come in.
“Anything is appreciated, even if it is a £1,” said Beth, “whatever people can donate will be greatly appreciated.
“But this is not just about the fundraising, it is also about raising awareness for the charity – CLIC Sargent. There are so many families, young children, young adults going through this horrible time – especially during the pandemic – that need the support of the charity.”
