More than 45 people donned their walking shoes on Saturday 13th September to take part in the inaugural Big Walk to raise thousands of pounds for two charities.
The Big Walk, organised by Cllr Jon Hubbard and staff at local Melksham stores Co-op and ASDA, took place between Melksham and Bath, taking in a scenic route along the way.
The Big Walk is supported by Wiltshire Council, Selwood Housing, Greensquare, ASDA, Co-op and First Great Western. The walking route, which was approximately 17 miles, took part in two legs with walkers seen off by Melksham Mayor Terri Welch at 10.00am at the Market Place, and from there went down to the canal at Semington and along the towpath to Bath in the afternoon. The walk finished at Sydney Gardens, Bath, at around 5.30pm with walkers greeted by the Deputy Mayor of Bath Lisa Brett and much needed water and fruit.
The walk was organised to support two charities, Hope for Tomorrow, bringing cancer care closer to home, and Melksham Extended Services, providing counselling support for young people.
Cllr Jon Hubbard said, “The Big Walk was a fantastic experience. I’m not sure I have ever ached as much as I did at the finish but it was well worth it. I thank everyone involved for their amazing efforts and the money raised will make a big difference to both charities. I’m determined The Big Walk will return next year and will hopefully be even more successful.”
