Trips to the Riverdance 20th anniversary tour and Blackpool illuminations are just two of the upcoming excursions available.

On Wednesday 24th September a day trip to Birmingham NIA will take place to see the Riverdance as part of the show’s 20th anniversary tour.

“Since the show first burst into the public’s heart at the Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin in 1994, Riverdance has gone on to achieve global success- experienced by over 2.9 million people across the UK and TV audiences in excess of 2 billion,” said Peter Baker from Vision Tours. Come and celebrate 20 years of this dancing phenomenon in a show that’s not to be missed!”

The trip includes luxury coach travel to the event as well as entry and costs £69.50. Then on Sunday 12th October, see the Blackpool illuminations as a trip heads north for a one night stay by the seaside. The short break includes a night stay at the Hilton Hotel and a visit to the famous Blackpool Tower.

“Dubbed as ‘the greatest free light show on earth’, the lights are 6 miles  long and use over one million bulbs. The display stretches along the Promenade from Starr Gate at the south end of the town to Bispham in the north. The trip cost £119.”

Visit www.visiontours. info for full details and to find an extensive break down of the itinerary for these and other trips, whether it be a day trip or a longer excursion, to some of Europe’s most stunning locations.

  • Successful year of cricket for Melksham students

A school in Melksham has celebrated a successful year for cricket after increasing participation, fielding league teams and strengthening links with the local cricket club.

Students at Melksham Oak Community School have been playing cricket through PE lessons, extracurricular clubs and competitive fixtures. This year marked the first time the school fielded both Under-13 and Under-15 teams in the West Wilts schools cricket league.

Harrison Wall from the school’s PE department said, “This was a massive success, with the students who represented the school demonstrating outstanding levels of respect, ambition and pride.”

  • Community centre funding boost from local business

A community centre in Melksham has received a £700 donation from a local company to help keep the space running for residents.

Forest Community Centre received the donation from Talkwire Ltd, a local telecommunications and IT company, following a report that the centre was struggling.

The centre launched a fundraising appeal in June to help secure its future, after rising running costs, including insurance that has more than doubled since an arson attack in February 2024, put increasing financial pressure on the volunteer-run facility.

Committee member Sara Phelps said, “We at Forest Community Centre want to say a huge thank you to Talkwire for their generous donation. Their support will make a real difference to our community; we truly appreciate your kindness and generosity.

  • Melksham’s Winter Wonderland event cancelled

A Christmas event planned for King George V Park will no longer take place after Melksham Town Council confirmed it will not be entering into an agreement with the organisers.

Plans were shared earlier this year for Melksham to host a Winter Wonderland event in the park, including an ice rink, live music and food stalls. Local events company Kingston Group had been due to run the event from mid-November until early January 2027.

Following a closed session discussion at Melksham Town Council’s recent Full Council meeting, town clerk Hayley Bell confirmed the event would no longer go ahead.

  • Melksham rugby player named in Bath squad

A rugby player from Melksham has been named in the Bath RFC squad for the upcoming season and is hoping to secure his first start at The Rec.

Fred Kempton, who attended Melksham Oak Community School, began playing in the Rugrats section at Melksham RFC at five years old before progressing through the age groups at the club.

He stopped playing during the Covid pandemic but, after sport resumed, attended a trial at Bath and progressed through the junior ranks at the top-tier premiership club.

"I got an email the next week saying I was invited in," he said. "I went through under-15s and got into the pre-academy in under-16s. I played under-18s for two years, and whilst I was in under-17s, we managed to win the under-18 Prem. I managed to stay in the squad, became a scholar for the last year, and then this year I got invited into first-team preseason, which was pretty awesome."

During preseason training, Fred trained alongside main squad members and international players, including Dan du Preez and Will Stuart.

"At the start, the internationals were away with the international side," Fred said. "During preseason, it was basically just the boys that have been in that main squad, but you still had players like Du Toit and Will Stuart, which has been pretty amazing.

  • Community litter-picking scheme launches in Melksham

A new community litter-picking station has launched in Melksham, giving residents the chance to help keep the town clean and reduce litter entering local waterways.

The free litter-picking station, provided through The 2 Minute Foundation’s #2MinuteLitterPick campaign, was launched in Melksham Market Place on 28th July.

The initiative aims to make litter picking more accessible by encouraging residents, visitors and community groups to borrow the equipment, spend a few minutes collecting litter, then return the picker and reusable bag so others can take part.

The station will move to different locations around Melksham, providing a long-term resource for community clean-up efforts.

The route saw the team travel through Reims Circuit, Annecy, Mont Cenis Lake, Sanremo, Monaco, Cannes, Saint-Raphaël, Saint-Tropez and Arles.

Originally donated to the group, the Rover 45 was transformed into the ‘Duck Mobile’ with duck-themed decorations, stickers and rubber ducks added with support from local people.

  • Melksham youngsters enjoy free football in park

Young footballers took to the pitch at King George V Park on Friday 7th August for a free football session during the summer holidays.

The Free Football Friday session was run by Future of Football (FOF), giving local youngsters the chance to enjoy the sport for free, whether they regularly play for a local club or were picking up a football for the first time.

The programme has been supported by Melksham Town Council, which has organised a range of sporting opportunities for young people during the school holidays.

Head of Coaching and Development at FOF, Curtis Goodwin, said, “It’s been great to see such a brilliant turnout for the sessions. We’ve had over 100 children sign up for the summer dates, and it’s nice for our team of coaches to give back to the community.”

  • Carers walk 150 miles for armed forces charity

A local care team has completed a 150-mile weighted walking challenge in aid of Help for Heroes, finishing the final mile at King George V Park in Melksham.

The team of seven from Steps Ahead Care and Support completed the challenge throughout July, wearing between 5kg and 20kg of weight to reflect the physical demands placed on military personnel.

They took on the fundraiser to support Help for Heroes, a charity that has been helping their client, Melksham military veteran Simon Cooper, who sustained a spinal cord injury in an accident six years ago.

The team walked five miles every day, including during temperatures of more than 30°C, and raised £1,800 for the charity.
