THE Bell Cup was kindly donated to Broughton Gifford Bowls Club in 1988 by the then publicans Tony and Dorothy Stanley, on behalf of ‘The Bell on the Common’ public house.
On behalf of the club, Mervyn Davies explains, “It is a majestic, silver-plated trophy standing 17” (43cm) tall when sitting on its black display plinth, which adds to its most splendid appearance.
“On Saturday 3rd July club members taking part were drawn in teams of four to compete for the trophy which is both prestigious and coveted among the membership.
“Each team played three games of six ends against different opposition. The club acknowledge and thank Tony and Dorothy for gifting the trophy and for their continued involvement in the annual ‘Bell Cup Day’ in the ensuing years.
“The event has been a special day in the club calendar since its inception 33 years ago. Tony has much enjoyed playing for the club during this time and has previously served for many years on the committee.
“Although awaiting eye surgery and preferring not to play at present, it was fitting that he was able to attend the green and present the trophy to the winning rink of Roger Warburton, Margaret Bourne, Debbie Bishop and Stephen Faulkner.
“The club would welcome enquiries from beginners and experienced bowlers alike about our club and the game. Please call 01225 783332 or email sylviad@463gmail.com”
