It has been a busy early season for the members, with up to four fixtures completed in each of the last four weeks.

Broughton’s ladies, sometimes known as the BGs, have had the perfect start, winning all three of their friendlies. The most recent was at Trowbridge Westbourne. Once again displaying excellent form, and for the third time the BGs won on both rinks. Rink scores: Sue Davies, Margaret Bourne & Debbie Bishop 26-8: Irene Wood, Margaret Cooke & Margery Mandryko 15-14. These friendly games have been an ideal preparation, and confidence is high for the forthcoming Nor-West League campaign, which is due to begin in the third week of the month.

Heavy colds and flu-like symptoms necessitated three late changes from the men’s original team selection for the home MWTL tie against Devizes on 9th May. The teams met on a chilly but fine evening after earlier heavy downpours had petered out. Broughton produced a fine performance from the outset, crushing their opponents by 84 shots to 58 and 13-1 points. Pick of the Broughton side were Trevor Cooke, Graham Whitfield & Nick Paris who won easily 32-14. Other rink scores: Kevin Holmes, John Stewart & Richard Mizen 17-15; Vince Davis (capt), Hayden Arlett & Dave Alford 19-13; Richard Brooks, Mervyn Davies & Ray Thomas 16-16. The win moves Broughton up to third place in the table.

Three mixed friendlies have also been played, with two wins and a one shot defeat. The best performance was at Malmesbury when BG won on three of the four rinks with the score of 78-64. Winning rink scores: Sue Davies, Margery Mandryko, Hayden Arlett & Vince Davis (capt) 24-14; Mervyn Davies, Heather Davis, Rodney Bourne & Gwenda Kelley 19-13; Irene Wood, Graham Whitfield, Debbie Bishop & Trevor Cooke 18-14.

The club is looking to recruit new members throughout the season. Coaching and advice is available and is free. If you would like to know more about the game and our club please call Vince or Sylvia on 01225 783332 or email vincedavis3@btinternet.com

  • Creativity and connection at Melksham art group

An arts group in Melksham is helping people living with dementia explore their creativity and build social connections.

Community Arts Melksham, run by Wiltshire charity Beyond Dementia, meet fortnightly. The group offers creative sessions led by a professional artist.

Each term, members work on art projects that build over several weeks, allowing participants to learn new skills and explore their creativity at their own pace. With tea, cake and plenty of time to chat, the sessions are as much about social connection as they are about creating art.

To mark the start of a new year, members of Melksham Community Arts group made a 2026 calendar, featuring their own original designs. Copies have been distributed to all members for use throughout the year.

  • Wiltshire College & University Centre opens doors to prospective students following record-breaking open events

Wiltshire College & University Centre is welcoming prospective students and their families through their doors this winter and spring, following its most successful programme of open events to date.

More than 2,000 people attended the College’s autumn open events across the four campuses and its specialist University Centre at Castle Combe, with strong interest from young people, adults and parents exploring their next steps in education.

Building on the momentum, the College is hosting a further eight open events across January, February and April, giving prospective students the opportunity to meet lecturers, tour facilities and receive guidance on courses, apprenticeships and university-level study.

Feedback from the autumn events reflected a high level of satisfaction with the overall experience, with many visitors describing the events as welcoming, informative and reassuring. This was matched by strong levels of engagement and confidence, with up to a third of visitors applying on the day and many more saying they plan to apply soon.

  • MP welcomes government changes to farm inheritance tax

The government’s decision to change the planned threshold for inheritance tax relief on farms has been welcomed by local MP Brian Mathew.

The government had initially proposed a £1 million limit for full relief. After months of campaigning by farmers across Wiltshire and the country, the threshold will now rise to £2.5 million from April 2026 for inheritance tax bills when farms are passed to the next generation.

Brian Mathew MP said, “I want to pay tribute to the thousands of farmers, many in my constituency who I have been working with, for their tireless campaigning over the last year.

“It is utterly inexcusable that family farmers have been put through over a year of uncertainty and anguish since the government first announced these changes.

“This is undoubtedly a win for farmers and therefore a win for all of us here in Wiltshire who value family farms’ role in food security, protecting our rural environment and providing good local jobs.”

  • Melksham golfer takes on ambitious challenge

A golfer from Melksham has been on a mission to complete an ambitious challenge and has been documenting his progress on social media.

Jacob Brickell set himself a personal challenge in October to go from a 24-handicap golfer to a scratch golfer, an elite amateur player with a handicap of 0, in just one year.

Jacob grew up in Melksham and now lives in Spain with his wife and young family. He is staying temporarily at his parents’ house in Southwick to help his father recover from a stroke.

He has been practising daily at Westbury Golf Club and sharing his progress with thousands of followers on social media.

“I go there almost every day at the moment as it’s only a few minutes from my house,” said Jacob. “I have spoken to a few people in the management at Westbury Golf Club and they really support the journey.”

  • Poker evenings deal a winning hand at Melksham Cons Club

A new season of poker gets underway next week at Melksham Cons Club.

The friendly weekly games take place every Wednesday evening from 7.30pm – with the new season starting on the 21st – welcoming both men and women aged 18 and over, whatever their experience level.

The group prides itself on being open and sociable, with around 16-20 players taking part each week, aged from their early 30s to 70s.

“It’s a friendly and relaxed evening and we’re always keen to see new faces, whether you’ve played poker for years or you’re just starting out,” said organiser Dave Jenkins. “People can come along, enjoy a game and be part of a welcoming group.”

Entry costs £5 per week, with a cash prize awarded at the end of the night depending on the number of entrants. Players can also opt into a fun £2 side pot, which builds each week until someone wins it by getting a four of a kind, a straight or even a royal flush.

  • RSPB Wiltshire Big Garden Birdwatch

The world’s largest garden wildlife survey returns this month, with hundreds of thousands of people watching and counting the UK’s garden birds over the last weekend in January for the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

Almost 600,000 people took part in across the UK in 2025, counting more than 9 million birds of over 80 species. In Wiltshire just over 8,800 residents joined in the count and the RSPB hopes even more residents will sign up for 2026.

The survey provides a valuable snapshot of how our most common garden birds are faring and taking part is one positive way to take action for birds and nature.

This year’s event takes place on 23rd, 24th and 2th January. People in Wiltshire are asked to spend an hour watching and counting the birds in their garden or local park, or from their balcony, then send their results to the RSPB.

In Wiltshire the top three birds recorded last year were: House Sparrow, Blue Tit, and Woodpigeon.

  • Safety improvements planned at hospital car park

The car park and lighting at Melksham Community Hospital could be upgraded to improve safety for pedestrians and patients.

An application by NHS Property Services has been submitted to Wiltshire Council to reconfigure and resurface the designated car parking area outside the hospital on Spa Road, along with the installation of new lighting.

The proposed reconfiguration includes 28 parking spaces, including five accessible spaces, one ambulance bay and two pull-in bays. The plans also include a new grassed area, the installation of 11 external lighting columns and the replacement of three existing lighting columns.

The revised layout would also create a dedicated pedestrian route linking all parking spaces and providing a safer pathway for people accessing the hospital.
